Charles (Chuck) Crawford Obituary
Charles (Chuck) Crawford Passed away peacefully in Mill Valley on March 17 surrounded by his family. He was 89 years old. Chuck was born in San Francisco, the only child of Fred and Hilda Crawford. The family moved to Mill Valley where Chuck attended Tamalpais High. At Tam and then at College of Marin and San Francisco State University, Chuck excelled as a track runner and basketball player. At SFSU he set the single game scoring record dropping in 38 points. It was also at SFSU that he met his bride, Eleanor Goode, with whom he shared 66 years of marriage, two children, and four grandchildren. Chuck served in the U.S. Army prior to teaching and coaching in Stockton. He moved back to Mill Valley with Eleanor in 1954 when he began his 33 year tenure at Tamalpais High School: as a teacher of Physical Education, American Government, and Driver's Education, a coach of track and field, basketball, football and golf, a Vice Principal, and a beloved counselor. In 1963 Chuck was named Outstanding Young Man of the Year by the Mill Valley Chamber of Commerce. He was inducted into the Marin County Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989 and was a long-time member of the Mill Valley Historical Society. Chuck and Eleanor enjoyed spending time with their many friends, traveling, and vacationing annually on the Smith River with their children and grandchildren. Chuck appreciated music, loved laughter, and valued his connection to Mill Valley. Above all, he had a genuine interest in people. Throughout his life he actively engaged with all whom he encountered. He is warmly remembered by generations of families and former students and counselees. Friends describe him as a sweet and noble man, steady with a gentle soul, caring, patient, always ready to listen and help smooth the way with humor and grace, the wisest of men. This is his legacy. In his one lifetime, Chuck touched thousands of lives. Chuck is survived by his wife Eleanor, his daughter and son-in-law Carol (Crawford) and Charley Stump, his son and daughter-in-law Brian and Caroline (Kirsch) Crawford, and his four grandchildren, Sam and Josie Stump and Charlotte and Madeleine Crawford. The family will plan a celebration of life at a later date.
