Maureen Roche Obituary
Maureen Roche Maureen Roche, a longtime resident of Mill Valley, died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, June 13th at the age of 100. Originally from Dublin, Ireland, Maureen and her husband Patrick (1921-1992), also from Dublin, emigrated to San Francisco shortly after their marriage in March of 1951. They moved to Mill Valley in 1960 with their 3 children and made it their permanent home. She and Patrick worked tirelessly to give their children every opportunity possible in life. Maureen was a lifelong and active member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, and a dedicated supporter of the Mt. Carmel school throughout its history. She was a Life member and past president of the Mill Valley Outdoor Art Club. In addition to her family and her church community, her other passion was golf, and she thoroughly enjoyed playing with the ladies' clubs at Mill Valley, Peacock Gap, and McInnis Park. She was truly an extraordinary woman, who lived every day with joy and left everyone the better for having met her. She never lost interest in meeting new people and conquering new horizons. In 1977, when Patrick's office relocated them to Japan and then Hong Kong for work, she excitedly embarked on learning new cultures. Upon her return to Mill Valley she joined a writers group, became an avid dominoes player, and took up stand-up comedy, bringing her sparkling Irish wit to OAC St. Patrick's Day parties, church potlucks, and the occasional gig at the Redwoods. However, her most cherished times were family gatherings. She was the favorite visitor to her children's homes, adored by her grandchildren, and readily joined many wonderful family vacations. She was always the first one invited and the first one packed. Her motto was 'have bag, will travel". Maureen will be very greatly missed by everyone who knew her, and none more than her children, Terence (spouse Robin), Noreen Roche-Carter (Colin Carter), and Katie Roche Carter (Mark Carter); Grandchildren Grayson (Sam) Makenzie (Eric Parker), Corina, Dakota, and Olesya; Sister Una Moloney, and her many nieces and nephews in the U.S., Ireland, England, New Zealand, Australia, Canada and especially the Moloney family from Mill Valley, Caitriona, Sean, Sheila (Newton) Eileen (Wee) Kevin and Deirdre. A memorial mass will be held on July 21, at 11:00 am, Mt. Carmel Church, Mill Valley, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Vincent de Paul's in San Rafael.
