Jane Chamberlain Obituary

Jane Phillips Chamberlain March 24, 1922 to January 26, 2015 Jane Phillips Chamberlain was born on March 24, 1922 in Santa Cruz, California. She passed away on January 26, 2015 in her home at the age of 92. Mrs. Chamberlain was the eldest daughter of Dr. Alfred and Thelma Phillips. She attended grammar school in Santa Cruz at Mission Hill School. Jane convinced her parents to send her, along with her sister, Patty, to Dominican High School in Marin County, California. Mrs. Chamberlain thoroughly enjoyed her studies and time there until graduation in 1939. Subsequently, she was accepted at Stanford University and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1943. Shortly after graduation from Stanford, Jane married Edward Borley, a young lieutenant in the United States Army stationed at Fort Ord, California. During the latter days of WWII Jane made her home in San Francisco and worked in a bank. When her husband was discharged from the service, they made their home in Marin County. Tragically, Mr. Borley suffered from a terminal illness and died at a relatively young age. Mrs. Chamberlain continued to live in Marin for several years, participating in many community activities. Ultimately she met and married J. Boatner Chamberlain, a prominent executive at Security Bank in San Francisco. They made their home in Ross, California where they dedicated their time to charitable organizations and events. The Chamberlains were particularly involved with the Marin Art and Garden Center. Upon Boatner's passing, Mrs. Chamberlain donated the funds to build the gardens around the fountains located on the grounds of the Center in honor of her late husband. Jane served as a trustee of Moya del Pino Library/Ross Historical Society. She worked as the events coordinator, hosting the June luncheon fundraiser, the September annual meeting, and the First Friday Forenoon Lectures. Her fellow trustees honored Mrs. Chamberlain in 2013 for her devoted services upon her retirement. Jane was also a member of the Marin Garden Club, the Northgate Group and volunteered at Laurel House. Jane loved her garden and enjoyed socializing with her many friends. She loved to entertain at her home and she took great pride in assisting those around her in any way she could. She will be deeply missed. A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, February 28, 2015 at Saint John's Church in Ross, California to be followed by a reception at the Marin Art and Garden Center. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers donations may be made to San Domenico School, 1500 Butterfield Road, San Anselmo, CA 94960, Marin Art and Garden Center, 30 Sir Francis Drake Blvd., Ross, CA 94957 or the American Red Cross, Santa Cruz Chapter, 2960 Soquel Ave., Santa Cruz, CA 95060.

A fine lady married to a fine gentleman, whom it was my pleasure to have known for many years, first as their cabinetmaker and latterly as Jane's friend. Having not seen her for too long, I just phoned to say hello, and am so saddened to discover the news of her passing. When I saw her last she was as full of life and as ready to amuse and be amused as ever. I shall miss visiting her and her beautiful house and garden. My belated sympathies to all her remaining family and those who cared for her in recent years.

Mrs Chamberlain was a very dear friend to my mother for over 50 years. My mother was one of her housekeepers back in the 1960's. As a little girl they would bring me to their luncheons and holiday gatherings as they chatted and laughed in her beautiful living room. She was the ultimate hostess whom I grew up admiring and loving. My children grew up loving her as well, and spent time visiting her too as she loved everybody. I just received the news today, as I had gotten busy after the holiday's in December and missed the Month of January checking on her and visiting this year. My heart has been so sadden today to learn of Janes' passing and not being able to receive one last "Kiss" as she affectionly gave to all her guest. I know she is in heaven. You will be missed "Grandma Jane" - Love

I think Suzy got it right, Jane was the cutest ever! I spent many years decorating Jane's Christmas tree after meeting her and her sister Pat at dinner one night. I always loved spending that time together and hearing all about her Christmas party plans. I know she loved having a good time. Here's to you Jane!

I spent several years volunteering with both Jane and Boat Chamberlain at the Marin Art and Garden Center. They were always supportive to the Center and were a generous, loving couple. Jane was smart, fun loving and a beauty.

My heart goes out to you for your deep loss you must be feeling for your beloved Jane. How sad to lose someone so loved and so needed. May you find comfort in prayer and in one another. (Jeremiah 29:12,13)

Many good memories over the years of visiting my fun-loving aunt with my daughters, by myself and with my husband. I especially enjoyed those occasions when we were privileged to share a meal with Aunt Jane and her good friend, Nana Smith. Aunt Jane had such a generous heart and I will miss her.
