Elizabeth Ann Shumaker

Caledonia - Elizabeth Ann Shumaker, age 79, of Caledonia, passed away Sunday, March 28, 2021 at Marion General Hospital.

Elizabeth was born in Marion, Ohio on January 6, 1942 to the late Muryl and Velma (Kellogg) Shumaker. The family of three moved numerous times throughout her childhood, calling South Carolina, Florida, and Georgia home. After graduating from high school, Elizabeth attended Florida State University where she played baritone in the marching band. She later attended Brenau College, University of Louisville, and The Ohio State University. Her degrees included Education, Art Education and Jewelry Design.

Always creative, hard-working, and resourceful, Elizabeth made the most of a small plot of farmland in Tully Township, near Caledonia. With her own two hands (and the Time-Life Books Home Repair & Improvement Set), she built a house where she resided with her daughter and grandmother. Elizabeth lived there independently until right before her passing.

Many may know Elizabeth from her years spent teaching art and photography at Elgin, Ridgedale, and Marion Catholic. Later, she worked at Elder Beerman Department Store and eventually retired from a position at Verizon in 2007.

Being fiercely independent, Elizabeth tended to her property, gardened, and tinkered around the house. She enjoyed her solitude and filled her life with music, nature, and The Ohio State Buckeyes. Over the years, she attended church at Martel Methodist and Caledonia UMC and was a member of the DAR. Elizabeth cherished time spent with family, especially summer visits from her granddaughters.

Elizabeth's unique spirit will be missed by her daughter, Diann (Lance) Cage of Saint Louis, MO, and granddaughters, Audrey and Quinn Cage.

A celebration of Elizabeth's life will be held during the summer.

We moved to the area about 5 years ago. We would wave almost every day and if your mom was outside and close enough to say a few words we would stop and talk for a few short minutes. Thank you for the books you left on our porch that was so kind of you to share a piece of your moms life with us. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I had the honor to come to know Elizabeth through Captain William Hendricks Chapter DAR. One of our great achievements was marking the grave of one of her ancestors, a Real Daughter of DAR. She was delightful, witty, and was always very kind to my mother and I as new members. She will be missed.

Diann and family,
I’m still in shock after reading this! I’m so sorry for your loss. Your mom was one of a kind and there are so many stories to share about her and Anna Mae. Your house was always one that we were allowed to be creative at. I hope you can think back and have many great memories to comfort you.
