James B. "Jim" Jerew Obituary
James B. "Jim" Jerew

Marion - James B. "Jim" Jerew, age 63, of Marion, died peacefully Sunday, August 5, 2018, at home surrounded by his loving family.

On June 21, 1955, Jim was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, the eldest of three children of Shirley (Arbogast) Jerew and the late Gene R. Jerew. He was raised in Marion, Ohio, where he graduated from Marion Harding High School in the class of 1973.

Jim furthered his education at Capital University, where he played quarterback on the football team during his freshman year. He then finished his last three years at The Ohio State University, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree.

Soon after college, Jim was set up on a blind date with Cathy Woodward, and from there the rest is history. Jim and Cathy were married in 1979, and have been by each other's side throughout their thirty eight years of marriage. Together they have lovingly raised three children: Jamie, Jessica, and Jason.

During the beginning of Jim's career, he worked as the General Manager at McDaniel Toyota. For the last twenty years, he served as a Financial Advisor for the Jerew Financial Group, earning Aptus's top advisor in 2010, 2014, and 2016.

Jim was a member of the Emanuel Lutheran Church, where he previously served on the Finance Committee. Believing in the power of education, Jim served as a Board Member of Digital Academy and the Marion Education Foundation board.

An avid sports fan, Jim loved rooting on his beloved Ohio State Buckeyes football team and the Cleveland Cavaliers. He also enjoyed golfing, tennis, and especially playing hearts with the Burly's. As an avid jogger, the highlight for Jim was completing the Columbus Marathon.

Feeling most at peace on or near water, Jim always enjoyed vacationing with his family and the traditional father and son trips, with his dad to Canada.

By far and away, Jim's proudest achievement in life was his three children, and his marriage of thirty eight years with Cathy. He truly cherished every moment spent with his family.

A problem solver, Jim wouldn't stop until he found the best solution for any problem. This made him the "go to guy" for his family and friends, as they knew Jim would do anything for them. He also was very sentimental, and had a very touching way of sharing those words from his heart. His warm smile and very positive and optimistic attitude will be missed by everyone who knew him.

Left to cherish Jim's memory are his wife, Cathy Jerew of Marion; three children: Jamie Elsey of Atlanta, GA, Jessica Jerew of Columbus, and Jason Jerew of Fort Myers, FL; his mother, Shirley Jerew of Marion; two sisters: Janice (Dan) Stuckey of Punta Gorda, FL, and Jill (Carl) Church of Marion; two brothers-in-law: William (Gayle) Woodward, and David (Lynne) Woodward; and numerous nieces and nephews.

His family will greet friends from 4 - 6 p.m. on Friday, August 10, 2018, at the Snyder Funeral Homes, DENZER Chapel, 360 E. Center St., Marion. Services honoring his life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Emanuel Lutheran Church, 241 S. Prospect St., Marion, with Rev. Mark Schuring officiating. Immediately following the memorial service, everyone is welcome to join in a celebration of Jim's life at the Harding Hotel, 267 W. Center St., Marion, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Marion Community Foundation, 504 S. State St., Marion, OH 43302, or online at MarionCommunityFoundation.org, for the purpose of adding to the Gene Jerew Memorial Scholarship Fund, which was previously created in memory of Jim's father.
