Donald E. Cohen Obituary
Donald E. Cohen, 73, of Emmaus, passed away at home on Monday, July 10, 2018, after a short but intense battle with cancer. He was the husband of Anne Marie (Zoshak) Cohen. They were married for 20 years. Don and Anne Marie shared a life of travel and adventure, and truly saw the world-from Antarctica to Tunisia. Born in Washington, D.C., he was adopted as an infant from the Children's Protective Society by Drs. Abraham and Mabel Cohen. He spent his formative years in the suburbs of D.C., and was a graduate of the Dublin School in Vermont. In the years preceding the Vietnam conflict, Don served as an Army Medic at Walter Reed Hospital. He was honorably discharged Feb. 8, 1971. Don graduated from George Washington University with a degree in Finance. He worked for the Social Security Administration and the U. S. Department of Justice, before deciding to turn his hobby of collecting stamps and paper ephemera into a career. While getting his education and working for H.E. Harris, an auction house in Boston, he started his first successful business. His work eventually took him to Emmaus, where he worked for a mail order stamp business, and most importantly, met Anne Marie, the love of his life. Before he retired, he also worked as an appraiser for The Stamp Center in Wilmington, DE. After retiring, he built a successful eBay business. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels, where he touched hundreds of lives and logged more than1,200 hours of service. His vegetable garden produced bountiful harvests. Don loved jazz music and quiet time at the beach-- especially Hatteras Island. He also loved all animals, especially his English Setter, Annie, who preceded him in death. He missed her comforting presence. With the help of his step-daughter, Suzanne, he was able to connect with his biological relatives in the last years of his life. Although they lived states away, their bond brought much joy and a sense of connection to all their lives. Don will be remembered by his friends and family as a man who lived by example, for his sense of humor, his strong values, and his simple motto, "Why not?" Survivors: Wife; Don was the loving father of Catherine Blake Cohen of Boston, MA; cousin Gloria Null, wife of Dennis Null of Meridian, MS; step-daughter, Suzanne Smith of Philadelphia; step-son, Steven Smith and his wife Cindy, and their sons Hunter and Carter of Barto, PA; his adoptive sister, Margery Beinfeld and husband Shelly, of Cambridge, MA; a niece, Molly Salmanovich and husband, Perry, of Boston; and nephew, Benjamin and wife Alison, of St. Louis, MO. He was preceded in death by his father Abraham Cohen, his mother, Mabel (Blake), and his step-mother, Alice Muth Cohen. Services: A greeting hour will take place on Saturday July 14 10:00 am -11:00 am at St. Ann's Church, 415 S. 6th Street, Emmaus. A memorial service will follow. Interment at Calvary Cemetery, Emmaus. Arrangements by Bachman, Kulik & Reinsmith Funeral Home, Emmaus. Contributions: In lieu of flowers, may be made to Meals on Wheels of Lehigh County and/or St. Ann's Church.
