James G. O'Donnell Obituary
James G. O'Donnell, 88, of Wilkes-Barre, passed away on Saturday, June 9, 2018, in the Timber Ridge Health Care Center, Plains Township, due to complications following a stroke. He was born in Allentown in 1930, a son of the late Hugh and Agnes Ginner O'Donnell. He was a 1948 graduate of Whitehall High School. He studied German and received his Bachelor's Degree from New York University and his Master's Degree from Indiana University. James was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during the Korean War. He was employed as a Disability Adjudicator for the State of Pennsylvania. He also taught German at Juniata State College and was later employed by H&R Block. James was a member of the Wyoming Valley Striders. He ran many races, including 6 marathons, and was a long-time volunteer with the Striders. He also enjoyed being an adult student at Luzerne County Community College. He was a voracious reader, an avid explorer, and enjoyed visiting new places and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Corrina, in 2008 and by his brothers, Danny and Hugh, both in 2017. Surviving is his wife of 43 years, Juanita; daughters, Rachel and her husband, Adam, of Rochester, NY and Sheri and her husband, Jeremy of Ann Arbor, MI; grandchildren, Finnegan, Thisbe, Giliah and Eliana; sister, Noreen, of Alburtis, PA; and ten nieces and nephews. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family with interment in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 500 Baltimore Drive, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702 or the Wyoming Valley Striders, PO Box 1704, Wilkes-Barre 18703.
