Reverend Phares O. Reitz, 93, of Allentown, died Thursday, July 15, 2010 in the In-Patient Hospice Unit of Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown. He was the husband of the late Eleanor R. (Lippiatt) Reitz, who died in June 1998. Born in Leck Kill, PA, he was a son of the late William O. and Flora S. (Brown) Reitz. Phares graduated from Muhlenberg College in 1936 and from the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia in 1939. He was ordained by the Ministerium of Pennsylvania of the United Lutheran Church in America. He was pastor at St. John, Berrysburg and St. John, Lykens 1939-50; St. John, Hamburg, 1950-56; St. Stephen, Allentown 1957-75. He also served as administrative assistant to the president (bishop) of the Northeastern PA Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, 1975-81. During his ministry, Rev. Reitz served on the Board of Christian Education and on the Examining Board of the Ministerium of PA. He also was a representative from the Ministerium to the Department of Christian Education of the PA Council of Churches. Additionally, he served as a board member of the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia; as Dean of the Allentown District of the Northeastern PA Synod; and as President of the Allentown Area Council of Churches. Rev. Reitz was a member of the Human Relations Commission of the City of Allentown; President of the Allentown Literacy Council; a board member of the Lutheran Historical Society of Eastern PA and of the Lutheran Archives Center at Philadelphia. During retirement, Phares was an active volunteer for Meals on Wheels, the Literacy Council, Cedarbrook, and Good Shepherd Home. He often preached in the PA German dialect and spoke at Grundsow Lodge meetings and annual Versammlings. He attended the Institute of Learning in Retirement at Cedar Crest College. Rev. Reitz was a member and Pastor Emeritus of St. Stephens Lutheran Church, Allentown. He served as a Eucharistic minister and on the Stewardship Committee, volunteered with the after school club, taught Adult Sunday School, and sang in the choir. Survivors: Daughters, Ruth E. Grim and her husband Thomas of Whitehall, Martha L. Reitz of Allentown; Sons, Dr. Thomas J. and his wife Alice of Madison, CT, Philip J. and his wife Susan of Allentown; Seven grandchildren, Andrew and Daniel Grim, Amy Grim Rice, Eliot, Joel, Michael, and Daniel Reitz; Three Great grandchildren, Gavin, Madelyn, and Braden Grim; Brothers, Reverend Elwood W. of Allentown and Chester L. of Lititz. Services: Tuesday, July 20 at 2 p.m., in the Egner Memorial Chapel on the campus of Muhlenberg College, 2400 Chew St., Allentown.
