Shirley Simmons Obituary
Shirley Simmons, 81, of Bethlehem passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday July 11, 2018 while in the care of the St. Luke's Hospice House. She was the daughter of the late John and Natalie Tomlin of Greenwood Virginia. Shirley was the wife of Gary Simmons with whom she shared 55 years of marriage, the mother of Kim Wright, the mother-in-law of John Wright, and grandmother of Ian and Benjamin Wright. She was a graduate of Albemarle High School and attended the Jefferson School of Commerce in Charlottesville Virginia. Her career as a secretary and office manager included working for law and medical offices in Charlottesville, and then working twenty six years at Lehigh University until her retirement. She often acted as a surrogate mother to graduate students, both foreign and domestic, who passed through the office. Shirley and Gary moved to Bethlehem in 1970, and over the ensuing years she was a member of many groups within Welcome Wagon, a gourmet group that is still active. She was a member of the Lehigh Women's Club and joined a bridge group, which is still playing together after 45 years. Shirley was a member of the Bethlehem Garden Club; she had a passion for growing hostas and day lilies along with a variety of other plants and flowers. When daughter Kimberly was growing up, Shirley served as a Brownie Scout and then a Girl Scout leader. One of her greatest joys was running a proverbial daycare for her two grandsons. She provided full time care when the boys were babies and then part time after they started to school. Shirley will be missed by all who knew her. Her family and friends will remember her for her pleasant demeanor and quick smile as well as well as for her tendency to giggle when talking, even on the phone. SERVICES: A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on July 28, 2018 at the Event Center at Blue, 4431 Easton Avenue, Bethlehem, PA 18020. Arrangements have been entrusted to Cantelmi Long Funeral Home, 500 Linden Street, Bethlehem. Her ashes will be interned at the Nisky Hill Cemetery, Church Street in Bethlehem. A memory tribute may be placed at www.cantelmifuneralhome.com. MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St, Luke's Hospice (Development Office), 801 Ostrum Street, Fountain Hill, PA 18015.
