George R. Schermerhorn Obituary
Schermerhorn, George R.George Rosenfeld Schermerhorn, 76, of Whitehall, died Monday, December 8, 2014 at Temple University Hospital, Philadelphia. For over 44 years, he was the husband of Eunice (Diemer) Schermerhorn, whom he married in 1970. Born in Oneonta, NY, he was the son of the late Paul E. and Grace (Garrison) Schermerhorn. He was Executive Director at Community Music School, Allentown from 1988 until his retirement in 2005. From 1962-1988, he served as Director of Music at the Taft School, Watertown, CT. He received his BA from Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY; his M. Mus. from Yale School of Music in 1962 specializing in French Horn, and did additional studies at Indiana University and Syracuse University, where he met Eunice in 1968. Since 1979, George and Eunice have enjoyed spending time at their Charlestown R.I. cottage- a retreat from which to enjoy the wonders of Nature. Prior to his death, he was President of Whitehall Twp. Public Library Board, President of Congregational Council of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Allentown and a member of Allentown Rotary Club. George was past president of Friends of Music of Bethlehem, and past member of the Board of Directors, National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts, NYC. Survivors: wife Eunice, son James Clinton and his wife Sally of Long Pond, two step grandchildren, Alan Gothard and Robert Mauer and his companion Brianna Wilkens and their children Hunter and Jayden, sister-in-law Miriam and her husband Roger Hatlem of Viroqua, WI, nephews, Todd and Paul. He was predeceased by a son, Joseph P. Services: Memorial, 3:00 PM, Saturday, December 13, 2014 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 38 S. 8th St., Allentown. A musical tribute will begin at 2:00 PM.
