Elaine Rider Gleim
September 12, 1924 - January 20, 2017
We regret to announce the passing of Elaine Rider Gleim from this world on January 20, 2017. May she rest in peace.
Elaine was born to Harold and Fannie (Hulburt) Rider in Ojai, California on September 12, 1924. She graduated from Nordhoff Union High School in Ojai in 1941 and received an Associate of Arts Degree from Ventura Junior College in 1943. She met a young soldier, Edward "Ed" Gleim, who was stationed at the Ojai Valley Inn when it was being used as an Army training facility during World War II. They were married in her parents' home in Meiners Oaks, California on February 16, 1944, just before Ed deployed to the War in Europe as a paratrooper.
Ed returned from the war and during his long career in the Air Force they lived in Alaska, Arizona, California, England, and Kansas. They settled in Atwater, California upon Ed's retirement from the Air Force in 1960, where Ed had previously been stationed at Castle Air Force Base. Ed then had a second career as a Civil Servant at the base.
After raising their family, Elaine and Ed traveled widely around the world. After Ed's passing, Elaine went on a two-week whitewater rafting trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon just before her 70th birthday. She then completed her travels with a cruise to Antarctica, having visited every continent.
Elaine was a musician all her life, singing in the Glee Club and playing in the orchestra all through school, topped off by playing violin in the Ventura Symphony Orchestra during her college years. During her years in Atwater, Elaine played piano in Vern Taylor's "Off-Beats" band, performed Senior Jamboree shows at the Merced College Theater, played at the Merced Senior Social Club, Atwater Cherish, and accompanied the "Bo-Peeps", a ladies' singing group. She played every Sunday at the Atwater Baptist Church, and then for the dinner hour at the Hampshire Retirement Residence in Merced.
After forty-eight years of marriage, Ed passed away in 1993. Elaine remained in Atwater until 2013 when she joined her daughter and son-in-law in Fillmore, California, where she lived the remaining years of her life.
Elaine was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her brother, Hulburt Harold Rider. She is survived by her daughter Lynette Elaine Long (Knox) of Fillmore, California; her son Kurt Harold Gleim (Coleen) of Las Vegas, Nevada; grandchildren Heather Brissette (Jean-Francois) of Las Vegas, Nevada; Michael Gleim (Tana) of Spring Hill, Tennessee; Robert "Bobby" Gleim of Las Vegas, Nevada; seven great-grandchildren and many friends.
Elaine will be buried alongside her husband and parents in Nordhoff Cemetery in Ojai, California.
