Rosa J. Sabala
September 19, 1932 - April 3, 2018
After a beautiful 85 years on this earth, Rosa J. Sabala passed away peacefully in her sleep. Rosa was born to Justina and Forlain Marin in Los Angeles, California and moved to Merced as a young girl. She and her sister were raised by her grandmother, Maria Guerrero-Gonzales, from whom she learned the importance of hard work.
These lessons came in handy as Rosa spent many years working in the fields, ironing clothes for extra money, and working at flea markets. Rosa was also passionate about the written word. She was a voracious reader, and she penned several memoirs, which detail the lives of herself, her children, and those who came before her.
But, above all, Rosa was dedicated to her family. Rosa met her husband, Jose R. Sabala, in 1952, and together, they created a big, noisy, wonderfully happy family. She loved being pregnant and holding her sweet babies. Over the years, she consistently documented her family's life, preserving snapshots carefully and lovingly in her photo albums.
Rosa is preceded in death by her husband, Jose, and her children, Sipriano, Raymond, Adrien, Carlos, and Elena, as well as her grandchildren, Robert Sabala and Joshua Lopez III. She is survived by her children, Maria Margie Lopez, Maria Loretta Pond, Tina Maria Sabala, and Maria Esperanza (Hopey) Sabala of Merced; Maria Jessie Lopez of Atwater; Robert Sabala of Hollywood; and Joe Sabala of San Diego. Rosa also leaves behind 21 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren.
There will be a viewing on April 10th from 4-8pm at the Wilson Family Funeral Chapel on W. 20th St. in Merced. Memorial services will be held April 11th at St. Patrick's Church on W. Yosemite Ave in Merced. The rosary will begin at 9:30 am, and the funeral service will start at 10 am. The burial will be held at 11 am at Cavalry Cemetery in Merced. Following that, we would love to invite anyone who'd like to celebrate the life and legacy of this amazing woman for a reception from 12-3:30 pm at St. Patrick's Church.
