After aggressive cancer treatment, J.D. died at home. Born in Goleta, CA, J.D. attended Montgomery Blair HS in Silver Springs, MD where he participated in the Communication Arts Program. Primarily a S.F. Bay Area resident since 1997, he briefly lived in Denver, CO where he met his wife, whom he married on Sept. 12, 2009 in Berkeley, CA. J.D. is survived by wife Hope Barrone-Falk and cat Bacon, and family members in IA and CA: father W. Andrew Falk and step-mother Mary Ann Falk; mother Lohrainne Janell; sisters Alisa Falk, Amy Falk, Leila Mbouombouo and brother-in-law Ahmadu Ndoung; grandparents Larry Falick, Jack and Lottie Robins.

J.D. is remembered by numerous friends as a creative individual with an infectious laugh. Sporting long hair, frequently blue in color, J.D. was skilled in giving hugs, hand-holding, and geek talking over sushi. He held a fondness for adventures, an appreciation for the Muppets, and a penchant for bacon. Immersed in the electronic music culture, he was a DJ in the SF Bay Area under the moniker Dr. J.D., as well as a DJ at community radio station KGNU in Denver where he played on a show called Sound Lab.

J.D.'s career focus was email technology and anti-spam systems and policies. Most recently employed by Return Path as Director of Internet Standards & Governance, he was an influential contributor to the anti-spam intelligence community. J.D. was a leader and member of several key industry organizations such as Coalition Against Unsolicited Commercial Email (CAUCE), the Messaging Anti-Abuse Working Group (MAAWG), and the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).
