Barbara Cavers Obituary
Barbara Cavers
Resident of Cupertino
Barbara Cavers of Cupertino, California passed away on May 31, 2018. She was born on July 27, 1926 in the state of Washington to Jack and Grace Hebert.
Barbara grew up in Sedro-Woolley, Washington during the Great Depression. She cherished her time with her father and learned from him to enjoy the everyday things in life and to make the best of any situation. Barbara was very close to her mother. On Sundays, Barbara would play the violin while her mother accompanied her on piano.
On Juniper Beach on Camano Island, her father built a summer cabin for the family. This became Barbara's "heart home." Barbara shared the traditions of summers at Juniper with her children and grandchildren.
Barbara graduated from the University of Washington where she met her future husband, John A. Cavers. They loved dancing at parties and at the Officers' Club.
She began her teaching career in the state of Washington. After she and her family moved to Cupertino, she taught adult education in downtown San Jose. A friend and aide in her class recounted how appreciative the students were of Barbara. Later in her career, Barbara was offered a position as a technical writer at Lockheed. Upon retirement, she returned to her true love - teaching. She started B.H. Cavers Advisory – an educational and tutoring program for foreign-born professionals and their families. She created her own program for practical language skills and helped her students navigate enrolling in schools and adjusting to life in Santa Clara Valley. Her compassion for others, love of learning, astute business skills, and creativity made her program particularly effective. She continued teaching into her mid-80s.
Barbara was the heart and soul of the family. She organized activities and special excursions so her family would have traditions, cherished memories, and strong bonds.
Barbara had a love for learning and continued to read novels and learn new things until her final weeks. She had strength and determination, and we could see this as she soldiered on in the twilight years of her life.
Her family and friends will miss her radiant smile, her exuberant laugh, and her generosity. She is preceded in death by her husband, John A. Cavers. She is survived by her children: Kathy, Molly, and John.
