Beverly L Mecklenburg
November 18, 1936 - March 21, 2021
Resident of San Jose
Beverly Mecklenburg, 84, died March 21, 2021, at home after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. She passed peacefully with family by her side in San Jose, California.
She was born November 18, 1936, in San Jose, CA. to Ervan, Sr. and Edith Mecklenburg. Her father was a tradesman, most famous for his woodworking expertise, and her mother was the ultimate homemaker, and they raised four children during difficult times.
Beverly was an outstanding mathematician, she loved numbers and symbols. She attended San Jose High School, and was a top tier graduate of the class of 1954. Beverly then graduated with honors from San Jose State University and always remained connected to the University, receiving a Masters degree in Science in 1971, and more recently, receiving the SJSU College of Science's 2019 Award of Distinction. She also established a Mathematics Scholarship Endowment fund to help support future eligible students.
Professionally, Beverly was employed at Ames Aeronautical Laboratories (later to become part of NASA) from 1956 to1958, and from 1958 to 1966 she was a member of the Mathematics Group at Varian Associates, performing mathematical analyses for a variety of research and development projects including prototype medical electron linear accelerators. In 1966 she was recruited by MIT to assist in the design of a unique high power linear accelerator that was successfully commissioned in 1971. She then assisted longtime family friend and colleague, Dr.Jacob (Jake) Haimson in founding the Haimson Research Corporation where, as VP/CFO, she proudly worked all hours of the day and night until retirement when the company was dissolved in 2016 after 46 years designing and manufacturing linear accelerator systems. She made many important contributions to the science of linear accelerators, and her accomplishments (too many to list) were remarkably performed over decades when math, science, technology and women were not often well associated with one another.
Beverly, sometimes known as "AB" for Aunt Bev always made time for family, with loving care for her aging parents, and assisting many family members and friends throughout her lifetime. She would always be the one to send a thoughtful note or card on your birthday, anniversary or significant life event. She was beloved and cherished by so many. Her other interests included playing blackjack, cooking, gardening, tennis, reading, and working with Jake.
Beverly is survived by her brother, Marvin (JoAnn); sister, Barbara (Ross); niece Peggy; nephew Dominic (Mary) and their children Jeffrey, Nicholas and Steven; niece Leanne (Cal) and their children Carmelo and Lorenzo. She was preceded in death by her brother Ervan, Jr.
A burial service is being planned by the family, and a gathering shall be arranged for a Celebration of her Life when it is safe to do so. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to Loaves and Fishes, www.loavesfishes.org View the online memorial for Beverly L Mecklenburg
