Obituary Condolences

Clarence (Sy) Alfred Syvertson

Resident of Saratoga

Beloved husband and father, Clarence "Sy" Syvertson passed away on Monday, August 13, 2010. He is survived by his wife JoAnn, daughter Marguerite, step-daughter Lynn, son-in-law David, and three grandchildren, Jacob, Jamie, and Lexi.

Sy was born on January 12, 1926, in Wayzata, Minnesota, to Alfred and Esther. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with Bachelors and Masters degrees in Aeronautical Engineering, and the university later awarded him the honorary degree of Doctor of Science. In 1948, he moved to California and began his career at NASA-Ames Research Center. His research included the development of the lifting body, a precursor to the Space Shuttle, and development of the XB-70 Valkyrie Mach 3 vehicle, as well as development and management of supersonic and hypersonic wind tunnels. For his work, he received the Lawrence Sperry Award in 1957, and he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1981. In 1978, he became Director of NASA-Ames, a position he held until his retirement in 1984.

Please join us for a Celebration of Sy's Life at 3:00 PM Sunday, August 19, at the Saratoga Country Club. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to either the Challenger Center for Space Science Education or Space Camp at the US Space & Rocket Center Foundation. Arrangements by ALAMEDA FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, Saratoga.
