David Mark Oliverio Obituary
David Mark Oliverio
April 30, 1960 – January 6, 2019
Resident of San Francisco
Dave always enjoyed laughing, especially at himself, and had some of the most interesting opinions and observations about life. His was, indeed, a life well lived. Many of those observations and opinions made no sense whatsoever when you heard them, but as you got older and wiser, you realized that Dave might have just been right all along.
Dave was born in 1960 in San Jose, CA to Josephine and Paul Oliverio. He graduated from Mitty High School where he played baseball and reportedly had a slick glove. Dave loved the Giants and all sports and graduated from San Francisco State University where he studied sports broadcasting and called many baseball, basketball and football games for the Gators. It was there, however, where he discovered that he had a different talent – sales. He sold ads for the college games for KSFS radio and was recruited by Moore Business Forms.
Following a successful career at Moore, he joined the San Francisco Chronicle in advertising sales where he met his life love, Coni Herndon – though Dave was adamant that the two not date while they were co-workers. Dave was a proud member of the Pacific Media Works Guild CWA Local 39521 and for a time held the role of shop steward.
An avid health enthusiast, Dave trained for and completed many triathlons including "The Escape from Alcatraz" in 1998, one of his prouder moments.
Dave loved nature, and "just trying to relax" in Yosemite, Pacific Grove, Pt. Reyes, and Costa Rica where he went on vacation and studied just enough Spanish to tell every local "Pido disculpas por nuestro presidente. Yo no voté por él" (I apologize for our President (George W. Bush). I did not vote for him.)
Dave also loved taking walks with his dog "Pepe Blue" in the Outer Richmond and along Ocean Beach. Most of all, however, he loved to talk, argue, and laugh with friends … and they with him. No one who ever met Dave will ever forget his smile, booming voice, wild hand gestures and that laugh. A non-smoker, he fought lung cancer and held it at bay for a courageous seven years, but it had the final "at bat".
The best compliment Dave could give someone was to call them, "A Good Man." He was that … and then some.
Dave was preceded in death by his father, Paul, and is survived by Coni; his mother, Josephine; his brothers Paul and Gary; sisters-in-law Catherine and Kathi; nephews Anthony, Steven, Matthew, Michael, niece Claire, god-daughter, Sydney Griggs, and - of course, his faithful companion Pepe Blue.
Dave was passionate that no one go should go without food. He asked that donations kindly be made to: Martha's Kitchen, 311 Willow St, San Jose, CA 95110, or St. Vincent de Paul, Sts Peter & Paul Parish, 666 Filbert St, San Francisco, CA 94133.
