Dennis Lalor Obituary
Dennis Lalor
July 8, 1947 - August 31,2018
Gilroy
Dennis Michael Lalor, of Gilroy, died peacefully on August 31 with his family and friends at his side, after a ten-month battle with brain cancer.  He was 71.
Born to Benjamin Joseph Lalor and Lucille Caroll Lalor in San Mateo, California, he graduated from Los Gatos High School in 1965.  He went on to receive a bachelor's degree in Psychology from San Jose State in 1969.
Travel was in his blood.  Beginning with childhood years spent in Japan, Dennis was at home travelling the world.    He spent several years working on the North Slope in Deadhorse, Alaska before heading to Paris where he became the manager of the infamous bar and restaurant, Mother Earth's Lost and Found. It was Paris where he met his wife of 25 years, Maria Pietri. Upon returning to the United States he spent several years as a carpenter in the Bay Area.
Dennis found his life's work when he joined South County Housing in 1986.  For the next 32 years, first as a program director then as CEO, he enthusiastically led an organization that developed over 3000 affordable homes for farmworkers and low-income families throughout Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, San Benito and Monterey counties. With a strong belief in social justice and the importance of decent housing for all, he went on to become a dedicated and respected advocate for affordable housing on a national level.   Known for his willingness to provide support and guidance to others in the affordable housing field, he was honored in 2014 as a Rural Champion by peers across the nation.
He loved good food, good wine, live music and, especially, good friends. Dennis treasured the many friendships he developed over his lifetime and was comforted by the outpouring of support he received in his battle with cancer.
Dennis is survived by his daughter, Honorine Fiona Lalor Parrish, granddaughter Evelyn Inara Parrish, his brother Patrick William Lalor and his sisters, Carole Annelle Lehr and Sharon Lucille Lalor.
A celebration of life will be held at the Grange Hall in Aromas on October 6th at 1:30 pm.
Dennis loved flowers but a better way to continue his legacy of advocacy and philanthropy would be to make donations in his name to the Southern Poverty Law Center (splcenter.org).
