Resident of San Jose
Brigadier General Fenwicke W. Holmes, U. S. Marine Corps (retired) closed ranks April 2, 2018 in San Jose, CA.
Born in Japan in 1918 of missionary parents, Fenwicke was raised in California and Hawaii. He lettered in swimming and water polo at University of Hawaii and UCLA and majored in Philosophy, studying under Bertrand Russell. After graduating in 1941, Fen entered the Marine Corps. He was commissioned before Pearl Harbor and served in the Pacific. He was decorated with a Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry on Vella Lavella in the Central Solomons. During his logistics career, he was responsible for computerizing the Marine Corps Supply System (1959). Fen retired from the Marines 1964 after a twenty-three year career. He was next employed by Del Monte Corporation, where he acted as Director of Systems and Data Processing. During that time he served on an inter-corporate task force that researched, designed, adopted and installed the Universal Product (Bar) Code system that is now the standard form for automated checkouts in the grocery, drug, and other industries.
Fen retired from Del Monte in 1983. He was married for 59 years to Bette Hoon Holmes (deceased) and is survived by two sons, Brian Ward Holmes and Stephen Wayne Holmes, and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1PM Saturday, June 16, at Campbell United Methodist Church in Campbell, CA. Donations in his name may be made to the Peninsula Open Space Trust or Campbell United Methodist Church.
