Herbert Ginoza Obituary

Herbert Seijin Ginoza

Resident of Mountain View

Oct. 3, 1924 - Sept. 2, 2011

Born October 3, 1924 in Kahaluu, Hawaii. Herbert served his country all his life, first in war and then in his career. The son of Japanese immigrant farmers, Herbert spent his youth in the Oahu countryside. During World War II, Herbert served as a B-17 gunner. He was one of only five Japanese-Americans serving in the US Army Air Corps. He spent time as a POW after his B-17 was shot down. Herbert was awarded the Purple Heart, Air Medal and a Presidential Unit Citation.

Herbert earned a Masters Degree from the University of Nebraska where he met his wife Edith. He continued to serve his country as a civilian biochemist first with the US Army and later with NASA. He made contributions to the space shuttle program and the search for life beyond the earth. He was a dedicated golfer and a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

He is survived by his son Otis Ginoza, his stepdaughter Cheri Collins, his grandchildren Mary and Maggie Ginoza, brothers Frank and George Ginoza, sisters June Yoon, Grace Young and Jean Dumphy. His wife Edith Wright Ginoza preceded him in death.

No services will be held. Donations can be made to the Hawaii United Okinawa Association, www.huoa.org.

I have had the fortunate opportunity to work with Herb at Fort Detrick, Frederick, MD when I was a young microbiologist serving in the U.S. Army in the early 1960s. I had always admired Herb for his intelligence and his respect for others. He was indeed an inspiration.
I have searched the net for many years in an attempt to contact him with no success. Unfortunately, I found his obituary today on line.
Herb will be missed by many who have served with him at Fort Detrick.

I did not know Herbert Ginoza; he was 10 years old in Hawaii when I was born in Schofield Barracks. As an army kid I grew up reading about WW2 and still collect army shoulder patches of units from those days, fascinated and touched by the lives of the men and women who wore them and came back to live as civilians, particularly Japanese-Americans who were not treated with the respect and honor they deserved. His picture and obituary have joined many others in my scrapbook, honoring in my small way those who did and experienced such remarkable things. Thank you and may God rest him and his family. -- Tony Phillips, Aptos
