Jean M. Ehret Obituary
Jean M. Ehret
Nov. 13, 1918 - Aug. 17, 2018
Los Altos and Cupertino
Jean Ehret passed away peacefully August 17, 2018 at the age of 99.
The former Jean Marie Schanke was born November 13, 1918 in Mason City, Iowa and grew up in Minneapolis. Her father and mother were William Schanke and M. Jean Schanke, and her brothers were E. Wilkie Schanke and Robert Schanke (Alice), all of whom she survived. Jean will be missed very much by her children, Steven Ehret (Maurya) of San Jose, Nancy Lutton of Prospect Heights, IL, and John Ehret (Janelle) of Arnold, and by her grandchildren, Jeremy Ehret (Jessica Bertram) of Aurora, CO and Veronica Ehret of Oakland.
Jean earned her B.A. in Music and her B.S. in Education at the University of Minnesota and later joined the faculty. She taught piano and was the accompanist to several student music groups. She has awarded a music scholarship fund to the university.
On a blind date in New York City, she met Robert Ehret, and the couple wed in 1944. They lived in New Jersey and in Philadelphia before moving to the Peninsula. From 1956, Los Altos was home for over a half a century, and the couple raised their family there. Her husband Bob passed away in 1988. Jean moved to The Forum in Cupertino in 2010.
She taught piano privately for many years and was a librarian for researchers at SRI International. Her active musical life included performances of Broadway musical comedies with her late friend Helen Yuill of Palo Alto. Jean was active in many organizations, including P.E.O. Sisterhood, the American Association of University Women, and the League of Women Voters. When Foothills Congregational Church was formed in 1961, Bob and Jean were charter members, and she served the church as choir director and on boards and committees.
A memorial service and reception will be held at the church, 461 Orange Avenue, Los Altos, on Saturday, October 20 at 1:00 PM. Jean's favorite organizations to support were Foothills Congregational Church, the University of Minnesota School of Music, Sempervirens Fund, and Hidden Villa.
