Joan Ward Baker Maguire

1942 - 2018 Obituary Condolences
Joan Ward Baker Maguire
March 7, 1942 - May 7, 2018
Resident of Los Gatos
Joan Ward Baker Maguire, 76, passed away peacefully May 7 at her home in Los Gatos with her devoted husband by her side.
The daughter of W.O. (Bill) Baker and Janie Sue Ward Baker, Joan was born in Macon, Georgia, on March 7, 1942. She grew up on a farm in Lee County, Alabama, where life was simple. On long summer days in the country with her family, Joan helped raise cotton, pick blackberries, and work in the garden followed by late afternoons rocking on the front porch, enjoying the peaceful day's end. After graduating from Beauregard High School in 1960 where she was valedictorian, she attended Auburn University (War Eagle). At Auburn she majored in music education, graduating in less than three years, and met the love of her life Reed Graydon Maguire whom she married on September 1, 1962.
Joan was a musician, a teacher, a gardener, and a world traveler. She loved camping and hiking in Yosemite with her family, singing in the choir, playing her precious violin and piano, and nurturing her roses. She had a great zeal for life, and she celebrated the beauty in nature. She was an intellect and naturally curious. A music teacher for 25 years in the Franklin-McKinley School District, she continued to teach after retirement, generously volunteering in elementary schools where there was no music curriculum. She inspired many of them to develop a love of music. Joan was a member of Mountain Bible Church.
Joan's family was a great source of joy to her, and she spent countless hours babysitting her grandchildren. She is survived by her endlessly devoted husband and steadfast protector Reed Maguire; children Reed (Heather) Maguire, Jr., Clint (Michelle) Maguire, Janet "Missy" Maguire (Bob) Dunbar, Amanda (James Martin) Maguire-Martin; grandchildren Katie and Bobby Maguire, Cohl and Hunter Maguire, Jennifer (Casey) McIntyre, Jake Dunbar, Christopher and Courtney Kuljis, Mae and Seamus Martin; and great-grandchildren Matty, Caleb, Brody and Reese McIntyre; brother Bill Baker, Jr. and sister-in-law Linda Baker; sisters Dolly Baker Wallace and Betty Baker Blanton and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to DeAnn Hammernick and Jodi Holbrook for their loyalty, affection and their wonderful care of Joan.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 19, at the Mountain Bible Church, 23946 Summit Road, Los Gatos. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the ALS Association.
When peace like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll
Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say
It is well, it is well, with my soul
