LOKEN, LaVerna-- 68, a breast cancer survivor in 1978, LaVerna entered into rest on June 17, 2002 after a three-year struggle with ovarian cancer. She is survived by her loving husband and best friend of 46 years, Ronald, of Saratoga. Dear sister to David Zimmer and Edward Zimmer of Minnesota. Beloved mother of John and his wife Margie Humbert, and of Marianne and her fiance Ryan Turner, all living in Los Angeles. Cherished grandmother of Jack and Lucy, who affectionately called her ""LuLu"".
A native of Minnesota, LaVerna graduated from Winona State University and taught first grade in Rochester, MN. In 1965 she received her Masters in Education from Columbia University in New York City and continued to teach first grade in Connecticut for a total of 13 years. After moving to California, LaVerna entered the real estate field in 1987 and served as a local realtor for over 10 years.
A very active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Saratoga, she served as secretary for the Santa Clara Valley Lutheran Parish and was a member of the San Jose Music Study Club. She was an avid reader with a large collection of books on religion and history, a supporter of the arts who regularly attended classical and jazz concerts, and a former musician who played french horn. She also enjoyed cooking, sewing and writing.
A memorial service for family and friends will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2002 at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Saratoga at 2:30 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church Trust Fund.
