Sarah Marie Swanson Obituary
Sarah Marie Swanson
May 12, 1980 - August 6, 2018
Resident of Livemore
Sarah Swanson passed away August 6, 2018 at our home in Livermore California after a three and a half year, knock down, drag out fight with Metastatic Breast Cancer. A reoccurrence of Breast Cancer she first had at the age of 12.
Born May 12, 1980 at Kaiser Santa Clara, Sarah was a 1998 Graduate of Cal High in San Ramon, and was proud to have completed her Undergrad in Forensic Anthropology at Chico in 4 years (2002), including an internship in the Butte County Forensic Lab. Sarah also earned her Master's Degree in Anthropology in 2010, while working full time.
As part of her Forensic Anthropology program, Sarah worked respectfully relocating, and cataloging human remains from a cemetery in Downtown Tuscon. Sarah's career took an interesting turn as she became a Human Resources professional working for Non-profits, most recently for Home First, in Milpitas. She found the work challenging, mostly because she was such a "people person".
Sarah formed very close friendships, her best friends Caroline Lloyd and Anna (Wheelock) Purl from Bollinger Elementary and Pine Valley Middle School, Hallie Gorman Campbell from Chico along with the rest of the RA and BGH crew, as well as newer friends from Home First and her experiences with First Descents, CancerCon and Young Cancer Survivors.
One of Sarah's newest friends is her niece Cora Swanson AKA "my baby friend". In the last two years they have shared their love of music, naps and raisins.
Sarah enjoyed travel, London, Paris, Japan, Mexico, and Sweden to visit Cousin Anna Lambert, as well as Las Vegas to visit her Great Aunt Helen.
Sarah's hobbies include aspiring Bass player for Sleater Kinney, reading Noam Chomsky, running, cycling, Roller Derby, subversive needlework such as, counted cross stitch and embroidery and kicking her Dad's butt at Jeopardy.
Sarah is survived by her parents, Paul and Stacey Swanson, brother Gavin Swanson (Norelle), Niece Cora Swanson, Aunt Gloria Swanson, Aunt Sandy Mclaughlin, Uncle Patrick McLaughlin (Liz), as well as cousins Joseph and Luke Smelosky, Brittany, Drew and Quinn McLaughlin. Great Aunts Vera Stutzke and Helen Rodrigues. Second Cousins Gavin and Anna Lambert, Scott and Alicia Stoffer, Kurt and Elisa Stutzke, Cheryl Stutzke and Third Cousins Jessica Lambert, Amy Leiva and Eric Stoffer.
Sarah is pre deceased by her Grandparents Richard and Darlene McLaughlin.
The Swanson family wishes to thank Sarah's Oncologist, Dr. Lucy Song, at Kaiser Santa Clara for her unwavering advocacy and kindness in Sarah's care. Sarah received excellent, and loving, care from nursing staff at Kaiser Santa Clara as well. Thank you to Kaiser Hospice nurses for their support of Sarah and our family.
A giant thank you to modern science and research. Both Ignyta and Loxo pharmaceuticals' provided drugs that were literally lifesaving. Cancer Sucks.
If you would like to make a donation in Sarah's name, the family suggests First Descents. They do great work, getting young cancer patients out into nature and "out living it".
There will be a Celebration of Life and lunch at the Swanson home Saturday August 18 at 1pm. Contact the family for details.
