Shelby Blair Brewer
Aug. 11, 1978-June 12, 2016
Resident of San Jose
Shelby Blair Brewer was born on August 11, 1978, in Santa Clara, California, and died at the family home in San Jose, California, on June 12, 2016, after a four and one half year battle with brain cancer. Shelby was the beloved only child of Martin and Cheryl Brewer.
Shelby attended Schallenberger Elementary School, Hoover Middle School, and Archbishop Mitty High School, from which she graduated in 1996. She continued her education at West Valley College before transferring to San Jose State University, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Administration of Justice in 2000.
Shelby held a variety of jobs while attending college, including part-time work at the Santa Clara County Probation Department. She eventually became a full-time Probation Community Worker and, in 2002, a Deputy Probation Officer. She remained employed in that position at the time of her death.
Shelby loved her job as a Deputy Probation Officer. She had a variety of assignments during her career, most recently in the Juvenile Division Court Unit, where she was highly respected for her hard work and knowledge of Juvenile Court law and Probation Department procedures.
Shelby will be remembered most for her beautiful smile, quick wit, and mischievous sense of humor. She was a "jokester" who loved practical jokes that victimized many people over the years. She had many friends who loved her dearly and will miss her greatly, as will her parents and family.
Shelby is survived by her parents, Martin and Cheryl Brewer of San Jose; her aunt, Debra Walker of Clovis; and numerous cousins, including her dear cousin, Nancy Brewer Cavagnaro of Mountain View.
The family would like to acknowledge and thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at the University of California, San Francisco, Medical Center, and Dr. Elwyn Cabebe and staff at Valley Medical Oncology Consultants for the devoted and compassionate care they provided for Shelby. Her family is grateful for all that they did for her.
A celebration of Shelby's life will be held at Villa Ragusa, 35 South Second Street, Campbell, California, on Saturday, June 25, 2016, at 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers or other remembrances, Shelby and her family ask that donations in Shelby's name be made to the UCSF Foundation, Box 45339, San Francisco, CA 94145 (Memo line: In memory of Shelby Brewer).

I attended San Jose State with Shelby back in the late 1990s. We only had one class together but to this day I remember the time she and I went to Johnny Rockets in downtown San Jose and enjoyed a meal together. She was beautiful, wholesome, kind, and I remember her smile. I had a huge crush on her! I have very few memories from my time at SJSU but Shelby and the meal we enjoyed has stuck with me so vividly.

Sadly, we didnt keep in touch after SJSU but I have often thought about her over the years. I finally decided to Google her today to see if I could find her and hopefully send her a message - needless to say I was shocked and incredibly saddened to read about her passing. I only knew Shelby for one semester but she left such a lasting impression on me that I still think about her 20 years later!

The legacy that Shelby left us lives on. She is always remembered and we talk of her often. She so loved her parents and family. I know the days are sometimes hard, but I do hope that knowing she is your angel in heaven helps lighten the pain. Looking at her photo with that beautiful smile makes me smile. Rest in love Shelby and continue to watch over all of us heavenly angel.

Shelby was my probation officer. I wanted to get in touch with her to tell her I made it because of her. I'm now married to a San Jose police officer and I'm doing so well in life because of Shelby. She really made a difference for me. Rest in peace.

I met Shelby for the first time and she was so friendly and outgoing. She had a smile that radiated and was contagious. Shelby was a warrior, she gave her battle everything she had, and she will forever be missed by all who had the opportunity to know her or be a part of her life. Shelby's legacy will live on and the heartbreak will get lighter with the memories we will hold in our hearts.

My condolences to her parents and family...she will never be forgotten and forever loved.
