Wilfred (Fred) Gregor Iltis Born April 20,1923 in Brno, Czechoslovakia, to Anni and Hugo Iltis (a biologist and author of anti-Nazi books), died December 11, 2008, in San Jose, California. In 1938, when the Nazis threatened to invade, he with his family fled to the U.S. During WWII he served in the Army in the South Pacific. Fred went on to earn his Ph. D. in entomology at U. C. Davis. He married Julia, a graphic artist, in 1948, who preceded him in death in 2004. After settling in San Jose in the 60's, Fred taught in the biology department at San Jose State University until he retired in 1988. His research focus was on the biosystematics and the life cycle of mosquitoes. Fred enjoyed playing guitar in his younger days. He was also an exceptional photographer. He is survived by his brother, Hugh Iltis, emeritus professor of botany at Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison, and nephews, Frank and Michael Iltis, of Madison WI, and John and David Iltis, of Salt Lake City, UT, and many friends. A Celebration of Fred's life will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2009 at 1043 Lick Ave., San Jose from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the San Jose Peace and Justice Center, 48 S 7th, San Jose, CA 95112.
