Edwin (Ed) Richie Lassettre, 81, passed away peacefully in Redmond, Washington on November 1, 2015, among family. Ed was born to the late Edwin Nichols Lassettre and Marjorie Richie Lassettre on January 16, 1934, in Anaconda, Montana. He graduated from University High School in 1951, then served in the United States Army for two years, receiving an Honorable Discharge as a Specialist Third Class on December 12, 1956. He attended Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, graduating with Bachelor of Science and Master of Science (both in Mathematics).
Ed began working for International Business Machines (IBM) in Columbus, Ohio in 1958, where he met Pauline Anne English. They were married on May 6, 1961, and she remained at his side until his passing. They had three children in Columbus: Paul Edwin (February 28, 1964), Marian Anne (February 4, 1965), and Christopher Walter (January 23, 1968). He worked for the Ohio State University Research Foundation while in graduate school, then returned to IBM as an Advisory Programmer in 1969. Ed and his family moved to Poughkeepsie, New York on July 26, 1969, and his fourth child, Neil Steven, was born on May 12, 1970. Ed worked at the Poughkeepsie Lab until 1976 when his family moved to Los Gatos, California. He worked at the IBM Santa Teresa Laboratory in San Jose until 2003. At the Santa Teresa Laboratory, he became a Senior Technical Staff Member in 1981 and an IBM Research Fellow in 1987 for his work on software architecture and operating systems. Both honors were firsts for the Santa Teresa Laboratory. In his later years at IBM he was team leader for timing and scoring at the Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan in 1998, and the Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia in 2000. He and Polly used this time to travel extensively to Japan and Australia, and Europe, as the testing center for timing and scoring was located in Madrid, Spain. In 2003, Ed retired from IBM and began work at Microsoft in Redmond, Washington. He worked as a software architect for high performance computing, and found new inspiration among friends and colleagues that kept him working until 2013, retiring when he as 79 years old. He continued to be actively engaged with his friends and former colleagues until the time of his passing.
He is preceded in death by his brother, Carroll Arthur Lassettre in 2000. Ed is survived by his wife Polly; his four children Paul (Honolulu, HI), Marian (Stockton, CA), Chris (Jill) of Los Gatos, CA, and Neil (Monica) of San Francisco, CA; his two grandchildren, Victoria Noel and Ryan Christopher; his sister- and brother-in-law, Amelia (Amy) and Marshall Watson; his nieces Mari Deminski, Constance Wiseman, Amie Brooks, Marcia "Marcie" Mendoza, Susan Dunlap, and Linda Topf; and his nephews Douglas Wiseman, Jeff Watson, and James and Michael Yeager. A memorial service will be held in Los Gatos, CA for friends and family at a later date.
