Alex Swetka

Passed away peacefully in Mtn. View, Ca. Alex was born in Clairton, Pa. He joined the US Navy in 1941 serving for six years then settling in California. Alex attended SF State where he discovered his love for the game of tennis. Alex taught for 20 years where he met the true love of his life, Sally, and they married in 1956. In 1966 Alex moved his family to Mountain View. He had a passion for gardening and shared his bounty with friends and neighbors.

Alex and Sally opened Swetka's Tennis Shop in 1969. He won local, national and international tournaments allowing them to travel around the world. Alex's success on the tennis courts earned him over 70 USTA National Championships, induction into the Northern California Tennis Hall of Fame, and a double gold grand slam championship. He remained active, competitive and inspirational, playing tennis for over 60 years.

Alex is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sally (McVaugh) Swetka and his four children, Mary Swetka Yu (Michael Yu), John Swetka, Nancy Garcia (Ricardo Garcia), Wendy Swetka. Grandchildren Alex Swetka, Garrett and Alexis Garcia. Great Grandson Jacob Swetka.

He was a champion who lived a life of dedication and devotion to the people and hobbies he loved. We know Alex is playing tennis up in heaven. There will be a celebration of Alex's life at Cuesta Park on September 15, 2012.

Alex strung my rackets in 1972. He & his wife were so nice, I loved their shop on Latham. I have always kept you guys in my thoughts.

Our weekly tennis group
He was a great assest to the tennis community in Mountain View. He inspired us all with his tenacity to the sport! We will miss his presence on the court...

Alex, you've been a wonderful brother-in-law. I think of all the times you drove your whole family back to Kingsville, Canada for our delightful family reunions. I'll thnk of you daily and try to live up to your legacy. Love, Chris
