Glenn R. Nelson 1949 - 2013

Glenn (64) passed away in his sleep August 28. 2013. He was born March 31,1949 to the proud parents of Ray and Laverne Nelson in Chicago, Ill.
Glenn was one of the founders of the very popular Dela Cruz Deli Restaurant chain along with his brother Randall Nelson. He started his restaurant career in 1974 when he opened his first restaurant on Dela Cruz Blvd. Soon after he opened there, a second location was opened on Stewart Dr. in Sunnyvale. The two brothers went on to open 7 more restaurants locally all over Silicon Valley.
Glenn witnessed the birth and growth of Silicon Valley and provided a great service to many workers with fresh food made fast. Lots of Silicon Valley start-ups and famous electronic company employees lunched at the Dela Cruz Delis regularly. Glenn used to say he could not imagine how many multi-million dollar deals were done over a $5.00 lunch at the Delis. The two brothers also went on to create a nationally recognized very fast system of service that could feed up to 100 people in 7 minutes.
Glenn was very proud of his other catering and event planning business. DLC Catering was created by Glenn in the 1980's to get a larger share of the wedding business. He created many sophisticated menus under the DLC Catering brand name. Within two years DLC was catering over 100 weddings a year. DLC would also cater large BBQ's for many of Silicon Valley's famous companies at the Buck Norred Ranch in South San Jose. Glenn also once organized a food and beverage concession service for over 100,000 people in Golden State Park.
DLC Catering became the first preferred cater for Apple Computers way back when Apple was just getting started. It was the favorite of many Apple catering and event planners in the 80's. Several Apple employees will remember some of Glenn's creations, including the famous Halloween Monster Mountain. Glenn built a giant food display at the Cupertino Campus with a live witch on top of the food display and used live actors in the food display to scare the guests.
Glenn has touched the lives of many people throughout his Restaurant and Catering career. Since 1992 as co-owner of Panetta's Catering he was still doing what he loved most. He was helping plan and cater weddings up until his death. The catering, food and wedding planning business was always his passion. Glenn was an excellent chef and was the creator of many recipes still being used today. Glenn was successful in business and in life. He will be missed by all the lives many he touched
He is survived by his wife Lori (Beesley) Nelson of Campbell, and his two children Brad Nelson of Las Vegas, NV., Cameron (Nelson) Hawkins of Boise, ID., and step daughter Amanda Reed. Grandpa Glenn fiercely loved his three wonderful grandchildren Samantha, Logan and Emma. They will miss his teasing and playing when they came to visit. Also survived by one brother Randall Nelson, of Los Gatos, nieces and nephew Scott, Pamela. Laura and cousin Beverly. He was preceded in death by his parents Ray and Laverne, Uncle Bill and cousin Roger.
