Dr. Albert K. Mineta
April 23, 1923 - November 15, 2014
Resident of San Jose
Albert Mineta died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, and a talented and compassionate physician. He was 91 years old and will be dearly missed. Al was born and raised in San Jose with his sisters Aya, Etsu, and Helen and his brother Norman, before being evacuated during WWII to the internment camp at Heart Mountain, WY. After graduating from Drew University in Organic Chemistry he joined the US Army's Military Intelligence Service Language School. Al obtained his medical degree, and did his internship and residency at UCSF and was a lifelong supporter of his beloved "Cal."
While at UCSF, Al met Joyce, the love of his life and they were married for almost 55 wonderful years. He set-up a private practice in surgery in San Jose and he and Joyce had 3 daughters Lisa, Mari and Susan. Al was an incredibly supportive, kind and generous Dad. He believed in education and inspired his girls throughout their lives with his tremendous love and devotion for their Mom. In 1964 Al suffered a severe head injury and family and friends rallied around to support Al and his family. He retrained in pathology at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and MD Anderson in Houston, and worked at VMC until he retired in 1994. Al was a smart, kind, hardworking and humble man with a dry wit. He loved his family dearly and was always grateful for what God had given him.
Al is survived by his wife Joyce, his daughters Lisa Mineta (Alan Minami), Mari Mineta Clapp (Stephen Clapp), and Susan Mineta (Michael Hearney) and 8 grand children Jennifer, Nicholas, Michelle, Thomas, Marissa, Kendall, Connor and Ian, and his brother Norman Mineta and many nephews and nieces.
