Gary Richard Helmick, 71, of Emmett, Idaho, passed away to begin another life with Jesus Christ, Sept. 17, 2012, at Walter Knox Memorial Hospital, surrounded by family.
Gary was born May 6, 1941 to Albert and Frieda (Nitzel) Helmick. Gary met and married Carla Doreen Brutsman on May 31, 1969, at Crouch, Idaho and together raised three boys, Travis, Troy and Carl ""Bert"" Helmick on a farming-ranching endeavor in Emmett. With 43 years of marriage came five grandchildren, Savanna, Lane, Zack, Kelsea and James Helmick and eight step-grandchildren, Brittani, Samantha, Anthony Fabela and Matthew, Mykayla, Kristian, Kiauna and Kendra Evans.
Gary was raised on a farm along the north side of the Payette River. He served as a communications specialist in the U.S. Army in Germany 1961-64. After two years at Ricks College, Rexburg, Idaho, he transferred to Boise State University where he attended with Carla. In 1967, he assisted DVM Everette Hill, checking Holstein heifers en-route from Idaho to Asia. Gary was self-employed as a rancher and as a timber faller for 30 years for Wilfong, Miller Bros., Boise Cascade, Pat Carlock and Columbia Helicopters. In 1994, he began hauling sugar beets for Idaho Sand & Gravel becoming a top senior driver before his retirement April 12, 2012.
Gary will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather as well as a hard-working, traveling and fun-loving man.
Gary was predeceased by his parents; sister, Beulah Lytle and brother, Robert Helmick. Along with his wife, children, grandchildren and step-grandchildren he is survived by his siblings, Keith Helmick, Bernice Rogers, Irene Canaday, Vivian Smith, Rose Darnell, Cleo Bramlett, Aaron Helmick, Karen Wildman, Edward Helmick and Tim Helmick.
We thank the nursing staff at Walter Knox Memorial Hospital, Dr. Tina McGuffy of Black Canyon Family Medicine during our time of duress for their care and compassion. We would also like to say ""thank you"" for all the support from close friends who helped us in our time of need.
Memorial Services were held on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012, at 2 p.m. in the 4-H Building at the Gem County Fairgrounds in Emmett. Arrangements for final disposition was with the Potter Funeral Chapel of Emmett.
