Phoebe Elaine Denney Schmaljohn of Emmett, Idaho, died the morning of April 11, 2014, at Serenity Care Center. Her dear nephew and family were at her side at the time of passing. Elaine was born Nov. 14, 1926, in Downey (Bannock), Idaho, to John Claude and Phoebe Christensen Denney.
She was raised on her parent's farm, where there were eggs to gather, beets to hoe and chickens to catch and prepare for dinner for the hay crews. She herded sheep and cows, played with the cats and dogs, baby chicks and geese goslings. Elaine always helped her mother with the housework and she learned to sew, embroider, crochet, knit, tat and make quilts, which were interests she maintained throughout her life.
She attended school in Downey, Idaho, graduating in 1944. She joined the Cadet Nurse Corp, during World War II and graduated from St. Anthony Hospital in Pocatello, Idaho, with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1948.
In 1960 she met and married Jacob Raymond Schmaljohn. They made their home in Emmett and shared many happy years together camping, fishing, gardening and spending time with family. Elaine also enjoyed trying new recipes, and often canned, dried and preserved food from their garden.
She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge 32 and the Valley of Plenty Quilt Club, where she was an active member for many years.
In 2008, she lost her husband, Ray, after 48 happy and loving years of marriage.
Elaine was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and a brother, John Farrell Denney; a step-son, Ronald Schmaljohn; and a grandson, Patrick Schmaljohn.
She is survived by a sister Lou Anna (Glen) Fifield of North Logan, Utah; a brother Claude Wayne (Jeanette) Denney of Salt Lake City, Utah; and a sister-in-law Sara Meredeth Denney of Caldwell, Idaho. She also leaves behind two step-sons Raymond Schmaljohn of Emmett and Dale (Marilyn) Schmaljohn of Boise, Idaho; along with five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff of Serenity and XL Hospice for their compassionate care. Services will be held Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at 2 p.m. at the Potter Funeral Chapel in Emmett. Burial will follow at Emmett Cemetery.
