Charles Walter McGathy Obituary
Charles "Sonny" Walter McGathy, age 77 of Cary, North Carolina and Sebewaing, Michigan, passed away on Aug. 27, 2018, surrounded by his family, at Wake Medical Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina. Charles was born on June 5, 1941, at a family home in Saginaw, Michigan. Charles married Suzanne McHalpine McGathy on July 7, 1962, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing, Michigan. Charles proudly served as a military policeman in the United States Airforce for two terms. He was then employed at, and retired from, General Motors while also owning and operating McGathy Commercial Fishing. He also loved to hunt and trap. He and his wife then relocated to North Carolina where he served as Facility Manager at Faith Lutheran School in Raleigh, North Carolina, before fully retiring and enjoying camping and trout fishing in the mountains of North Carolina. He also enjoyed his time with the men's club of Resurrection Lutheran Church in Cary, North Carolina. Charles is survived by his wife of 56 years, Suzanne McHalpine McGathy; his children Charles Scott McGathy of Sebewaing, Michigan, Kimberly (Matthew) Goss of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, and Mary Beth (Norman) Klein of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina; grandchildren Alison and Benjamin Klein and Cody and Cassidy Goss; and many special nieces and nephews. Charles was preceeded in death by his parents Charles Elmer McGathy and Lilian Naffien McGathy; and twin brothers Ray and Roy McGathy. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 3, 2018, at Juengel & Mellendorf Funeral Home in Sebewaing. The funeral service will be Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2018, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing. Visitation will begin at the church at 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery in Sebewaing.
