Craig Weske Obituary

Weske, Craig
Craig D. Weske, 68, of Portland, CT passed in his sleep with his wife and best friend, Louise Somers Weske, by his side on June 12 at Hartford Hospital. He died of complications from cancer. Craig was raised in Barnum, MN. He was predeceased by his father, Walter, and survived by his mother, Delores.
Craig, a devote Catholic, was a Knight of Columbus, parishioner at St. Mary in Portland and, before that, at St. Mary in Meriden. He enjoyed boating and belonging to the Meriden Motor Boat Club. He was a member of the Moose Club, the Elks, and a Special Olympics volunteer. He retired from Eversource, formerly CL&P, in 2014 after 29 years. He previously worked at Amtrak. At both companies, he led the telecommunication and radio groups. He coached countless youth hockey and baseball teams in Meriden and Middletown. He led hockey teams to state and New England titles. He loved the friendships that working, volunteering and coaching allowed.
In 1969, Craig enlisted in the U.S. Navy, became a submariner, and served for four years as a radioman on the USS Von Steuben - based in Charleston, S.C. and Scotland. While training in Groton, he met the love of his life, Louise. They married in 1972 and lived in Charleston, Enfield, Meriden and Portland during their 47-year marriage. He is survived by his son, Chris D. Weske, and his wife, Gina of East Haddam; also survived by his son, Paul L. Weske, and his wife, Jessica of Cheshire. His six grandchildren are: Margo and Betty Weske; Andrew and Tyler Warren; and Sean and Lola Weske. He is survived by three-sisters; Shirley Hughes, Cheryl Sklors and Sharla Weske. He is survived by his brother-in-law, Dr. Paul J. Somers and his wife, Michele.
The funeral will be held on Friday (June 21st) at 9 a.m. from the Portland Memorial Funeral Home, 231 Main St., Portland, followed by a mass of Christian burial in St. Mary's Church, Portland at 10 a.m. Burial will be in the State Veterans Cemetery, Middletown, with full military honors. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday (June 20th) from 4-7 p.m.

I sang in the St.Mary's choir with Craig. Not only did he have a beautiful baritone voice but a warm and welcoming disposition. Craig showed us all an inner strength and fortitude during a tough battle with a terminal illness. Long live his memory.

I knew Wes' from being a fellow parishioner at St. Mary Church in Meriden. We also collaborated on many a volunteer work party there over the years. It was truly heartwarming but not surprising to read in all the other online condolences that he had the same impact on me as he had on everyone else no matter whether it was work or play, church or volunteer activity for a cause near to his heart. He always brought a smile into the room and never a complaint even with all he had to go through.
He was truly a wonderful man, a class act and he will be greatly missed. We were all blessed to have known him albeit for too short a time. My sincere condolences go out to Louise, Paul, Chris and the rest of the family. Rest In Peace my friend.

I was so sorry to hear about the passing of Craig. He was one of the finest men I've ever known. He reached out to everyone he met and remained friends for years after. He always did the right thing, sometimes in the face of great adversity. He will be greatly missed by Louise and his family as well as the many many friends he's made along the way.

I'VE KNOWN Craig forQUITE SOME TIME.ENJOYED MANY A SATURDAY FOR A FEW ROUNDS OF BEERS AT THE PR BUT I HAVE TO SAY cRAIG WAS A GENTLEMAN AND A PLEASURE TO BE AROUND. HIS CONDUCT WAS BEYOND REPROACH. EVEN THE FOUL SPEAKING LADDS CLEANED IT UP WHEN CONVERSING WITH CRAIG, ME INCLUDED. HE LOVED TO HEAR MY "SHORT" stories about the tugs and the tankers as I did the subs and his voyages beneath the sea.Craig is missed by all and will be put to rest a short way down the road from me where I can now take my walks spending time at the veterans locations knowing Craig is finally at peace. The nasty cancer can hurt him no more.

My sincere condolences to the Weske family at this sad time. Craig was one of the kindest, sweetest, jolliest people I've ever known or had the pleasure to work with at Eversource. He ALWAYS had a smile on his face no matter what the situation, or how he was feeling, he was just a joy to be around. Whenever Craig walked into the room, it would light up. I will especially miss him at our Special Olympic meetings. Heaven has gained a beautiful soul. Rest in peace my friend, you will truly be missed by all who knew you.

Dear Louise & Family,
When I heard the news about Craig, I was truly heartbroken. Mere words can't express how wonderful a man Craig truly is, and how much he will be missed. At Saint Mary's in Meriden, I don't know what we would have done without Craig's help with both the church and cemetery. He gave of himself tirelessly. When he was asked how he was feeling, he would always reply, "Great!" or "I'm just fine." He was always smiling. No matter how he felt, he was always smiling. I can still feel him sitting next to me in church. Craig would be singing and sometimes I would just stop and listen to him sing. I also loved to hear him read. He was so expressive and brought those readings to life. When he was a Eucharistic minister at Mass, I could hear him say, "Body of Christ." The words were loud & clear...and melodic. He had a way of making words so melodic. He truly loved what he was doing. You know, I could ask Craig anything and get a straight answer. He never steered me wrong when it came to repair work, money issues, cemetery concerns... anything. Please know I am praying for Craig, and all of you. I know you have many good memories and I hope they give you comfort during the difficult days ahead. Know I am praying for Craig and all of you. You are family.
