CHAKALOS, RITA B. Rita B. Chakalos, 84, of Windsor, beloved wife of John Chakalos, passed away peacefully at her home, with grace and dignity, surrounded by her loving family, on November 21, 2013. Rita was born on February 26, 1929 to the late Jacob and Martha (Cyranowicz) Baranowski in Middletown. She was a 1947 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Middletown. Upon graduation, she attended Waterbury Hospital School of Nursing, graduating with her RN in 1950. In 1954 she married John and they settled in Windsor where they raised their four daughters. In 1994 John and Rita built a home in West Chesterfield, NH and began splitting their time between New Hampshire and Connecticut. Rita was a devout Catholic, dedicated parishioner and Eucharistic minister of St. Gabriel church in Windsor. She was a member of many clubs and organizations including Catholic Daughters, and a local chapter of T.O.P.S. She was a generous contributor of many charitable organizations; Rita was instrumental in organizing a large annual holiday food drive for the local food pantry in New Hampshire. She was an avid reader and proud to fill her library with an abundance of books and photo albums which included not only her precious memories of her family but also her granddogs. Rita’s kind, loving, supportive and positive demeanor will be dearly missed by all that knew and loved her. In addition to her husband of 59 years, Rita will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Elaine J. Chakalos of West Hartford; Linda Carman of Middletown; Charlene Gallagher of Hampstead, NC; Valerie R. Santilli and her husband Lawrence of West Hartford; her sister, Dorothy Ozurek of Windsor; as well as her grandchildren, Haley and Colin Massie, Nathan Carman, Nash and Colton Gallagher, Zoe and Christian Santilli, her step-grandchildren, “Little” Larry Santilli and Krista Santilli. Rita also leaves many endeared nieces, nephews and countless friends. Besides her parents Rita was predeceased by her brothers, Harry Baranoski and Chester Baranowski. Family and friends may gather on Monday, November 25, 9:15 a.m. at the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Ave., Windsor, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial, 10 a.m., at St. Gabriel Church, Windsor. Burial will immediately follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford. Rita’s family will receive friends on Sunday, November 24, from 3-6 p.m. at the funeral home. Her family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to her hospice nurse, Margaret, for her warm and compassionate care.
