Michael Albert "Mickey, Mike" Gitaitis(1945 - 2018)

Michael (Mickey, Mike) Albert Gitaitis, 72, of Middletown, Delaware and Indian River Acres, Dagsboro, Delaware, passed away peacefully at home in Middletown early Sunday morning, May 20, 2018.

Mickey was born in Chester, Pennsylvania on June 7, 1945 to the late Michael Anthony and Nada (Tomsky) Gitaitis.

The family moved to the farm in rural Middletown when he was a young boy. Mickey was raised on the farm, building a house and raising his family on the same property. He attended schools in Middletown since the first grade, Mickey is a graduate of Middletown High School, Class of 1963, where he played on the football and baseball teams. Upon graduation, he attended Louisburg College, Louisburg, NC and Goldey Beacom College, Wilmington, DE.

Mickey served his country in the Delaware Army National Guard from 1965 to 1971 as part of the Delaware Coastal Artillery, Signal Corp. and Ordinance Company.

After working various jobs, Mickey began working for Atlas Chemical Company (ICI, Uniqema, Croda) in 1967. He retired from Croda in 2008 as a research technologist after a career of more than 40 years.

Mickey was a licensed US Coast Guard charter boat captain. He and his partners ran a charter boat business out of Indian River, Delaware, taking fishing parties deep sea fishing on the JADE (and subsequently the JADE II).

He was a jack of all trades and master of them all. He was a talented carpenter, building the family home and, along with his partners, several versions of the JADE and JADE II. He could always be relied on by his family and friends to build, design and repair almost anything. He learned from his father, carrying it on in his life, "if a man built it, a man can fix it", and he did.

Mickey is survived by his devoted wife and soulmate of 27 years, Joan; his children, Deena Haiber (Christian) of Land O' Lakes, Fla., Andrew Gitaitis (Emily Boyle) of Millsboro and Ryan Stewart of Middletown; his grandchildren, Gillian and Claire Haiber of Land O'Lakes, Fla., Ethan Boyle of West Grove, Pa. and Connor Stewart of Middletown.
