W.L. "Red" Cooney
June 24, 1934 - January 30, 2013
Red passed away peacefully at Valley Comfort Senior Care in Modesto
Born in Craig, Colorado; Red moved to Banning, California with his family during his high school days, where he played football at Banning High School. In March of 1952, Red joined the Navy and and served honorably during the Korean War aboard the USS Ashtabula. Red was honorably discharged June 14, 1955.
He soon found work at Pacific Bell in November of '55 in Oakland, CA.; were he earned $52.50 a week. He was a lineman, and a PBX installer for 35 years. Red worked in many Pac-Bell garages, including: Ashland Ave., B Street, and Castro Valley; where he made many friends. Red retired in November of 1990 and stared his own business installing phones. He retired from that business venture in 1995.
Red married the love of his life Dorothy Nunes Goodwin in January of 1968, when he became the step-father of three boys that loved him very much. During those working years, Red and Dorothy worked hard to raise their family and build life-long friendships. Red enjoyed traveling with his family to Disneyland, Hawaii, Washington D.C., and Colorado. Red and Dorothy also went on cruises with friends to the Caribbean, Mexico, Alaska and the North East Coast. Red was a big football and baseball fan and, along with his boys, was a season ticket holder of the Oakland Raiders and attended the 1972 and 1974 World Series in Oakland. Red and Dorothy lived together in San Lorenzo, CA. for 45 years. They moved to Salida, CA. in July of 2012 to be closer to their family. Red was a very caring and loving husband and father. His gentle kindness and humor touched many lives.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Dorothy Cooney of Salida, CA., and children: Michael Goodwin of Elk Grove, CA.; David Goodwin of W. Sacramento, CA.; Kenneth Goodwin of Modesto, CA.; Kimbely Donovan of El Dorado Hills, CA.; and Kelly Cooney of Dixon, CA. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by everyone.
Visitation will be held from 4pm to 8pm on Monday, February 4th at the Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel, 419 Scenic Drive, Modesto, CA. A funeral service will be held at 1:00pm on Tuesday, February 5th, also at the Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel. A burial service will follow at Acacia Memorial Park, with full military honors.
