Barbara Alene Mortensen

Barbara Alene Mortensen (Holbrook), age 80, passed away October 15, 2018 after a short illness. She was born in Modesto, CA in 1938, daughter of Allen Clement Holbrook and Frances Alene Johnson. She grew up in Oakdale, CA where she graduated from Oakdale High School in 1956. She earned a bachelor's degree from San Jose State University in 1959 and a master's degree from Washington State University in 1960. A health and physical education teacher and coach for more than 40 years, she spent the majority of her career at Modesto Junior College. During her tenure at MJC, she was instrumental in establishing the Women's Athletic Program and served as the head coach for several of the earliest women's intercollegiate teams at the school, including basketball, volleyball, field hockey and softball. Following retirement, she enjoyed traveling, reading, cooking, genealogical research and spending time with her grandchildren.
She was married to Rodney F. Mortensen, Jr. since 1969. She leaves behind a son, Jacob T. Mortensen (Kristi L. Hale), grandsons Teige R. Mortensen, Spencer G. Mortensen and Samuel C. Hale all of Modesto, granddaughter Kimber M. Hale of Corvallis, OR and brother and sister-in-law Allen H. and W. Evelyn Holbrook of Idaho. She was preceded in death by daughter, Sara and daughter-in-law, Kristin.
A private burial will take place a Lakewood Memorial Park. A casual reception and celebration of life for all her numerous friends and family will take place at Gervasoni's Restaurant in Modesto on Saturday, October 27th from 2 to 5 p.m. – aloha shirts perfectly acceptable attire.
