David E. Osnes
July 8, 1949 – December 30, 2018
David "Dave" Osnes, 69, passed away peacefully at home on December 30, 2018 with his wife at his side after a courageous battle against ALS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
He is survived by his devoted, loving wife of 48 years, Linda Osnes of Modesto, dedicated son Sidney Osnes (Megan) of Modesto, loving daughter Gayle Osnes Weiss (Mark) of Menlo Park, three energetic grandsons (plus one on the way), caring mother, Melba Osnes of Modesto, and several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Sverre Osnes, and sister, Marilyn Osnes Christiansen.
Dave was born in Southern California on July 8, 1949 and became a Stanislaus County resident when he moved with his parents and sister to Patterson as a young boy. He attended grade school in the town and played football for Patterson High. Dave attended Modesto Junior College and moved to Modesto after marrying Linda. He worked as an electrician for Modesto City School District for 39 years.
Dave was a quiet, introspective man with a variety of interests, from hunting and fishing to RC airplanes and model railroads. Dave was passionate about bass fishing and proudly displayed his greatest catch on the living room wall. He and Linda enjoyed retirement by traveling to national parks and remote, scenic campgrounds. Mesmerized with steam locomotives and diesel train engines, he spent countless hours admiring the thunderous giants and enjoyed scenic train rides throughout the country, from Alaskan glaciers to Vermont's fall foliage. A talented, hard-working Mr. Fix-It and Do-it-Yourselfer, Dave was meticulous with home improvement and proud of his remodeling projects. He enjoyed music and owned the unofficial record for largest collection of golden oldies.
Dave was a loyal husband and son, supportive father and playful, adoring grandfather. He will be dearly missed, and his kindness will be forever cherished by all who knew him.
The celebration of life for David will be held on January 19, 2019 at 11 am at Centenary United Methodist Church, 1911 Toyon Avenue in Modesto.
In lieu of flowers, the family graciously requests that memorial contributions be sent in Dave's honor to ALS Association Golden West Chapter (www.alsagoldenwest.org) or Community Hospice Foundation (give.hospiceheart.org).
