Sarwan Gill (1936 - 2019)

  • "Offering our deepest condolences during this difficult time."
    - Lakewood Funeral Home

March 27, 1936 - January 4, 2019
Sarwan was born in India and moved to the U.S. in 1973. He lived in Modesto for over 40 years. Sarwan was well known in his community and had a wide network of family and friends. He regaled his family with exciting stories about his time in India. He vividly recalled his escape from a refugee camp when he was twelve, during the Indian Continent partition, just minutes before the camp was attacked, killing all those who remained.
He served in the Indian army for ten years as a young man, which gave him the opportunity to live in different parts of the country.
Sarwan was known to be the kindest and gentlest of persons with a carefree attitude, a wry sense of humor and always non-judgmental. He was known for his patience and his calm nature. His steady disposition was admirable.
Sarwan lived frugally and had minimal material needs. He was content with the most basic requirements. His simple pleasures were to warm himself by siting on the front porch or in his parked car to feel the direct impact of the sun. His light-hearted personality made him a favorite member of the family. He adored his grandchildren, and a highlight of the day was to pick up his granddaughter from school. He enjoyed working and continued to be productive as late as two years ago.
His family is proud of his low-key and unassuming character and is inspired by his humility.
Services will be held Tuesday, January 15th at 10:30am, Lakewood Funeral Home, 900 Santa Fe Ave, Hughson followed by prayer services at the Sikh Temple, Hatch Road.
