Sherman Carl Petersen
December 2, 1928 - August 7, 2018
Sherman Carl Petersen was born in Ogden, Utah on December 2, 1928. As a child, his father worked for a construction company and the family often traveled with his father from job site to job site. The family moved to Long Beach, California when Sherm was a preteen. He graduated from Jordan High School in Long Beach. At the age of 19, Sherm became an electrician and was a member of IBEW Local 11 for over 70 years.
On October 3, 1953 Sherm married JoAnn Keaster. They had four children: Sheri, Larry, Gary and Terry. JoAnn passed away prematurely in September 1960.
Sherm met Connie Haas in January 1961. They were married at First Lutheran Church in Long Beach on October 14, 1961. Sherm and Connie had two girls: Kim and Tami. While living in Long Beach, the Petersens were active members of Bethany Lutheran Church and School.
Sherm was an athlete with a passion for sports and for coaching. He spent many years coaching Little League Baseball, Bobby Sox Softball, Men's Fast Pitch Softball, Co-ed and Women's Softball ("I'll never coach women."). Hundreds of boys, girls, men and women were impacted by his love of coaching and his knowledge of the game. Through coaching, the Petersens began a lifelong friendship with the Thayer family. This special relationship, which began in Long Beach, continues today in the Modesto, California community.
In July 1978, Sherm retired from electrical work and moved the family to Modesto. There, he became a real estate broker and, with Connie, founded Petersen Property Management. The Petersen family joined Emanuel Lutheran Church in Modesto where he was actively involved in the church overseeing the yard crew, participating in Bible Study and coaching the women's softball team. Sherm joined Kiwanis in the early 1980s and remained a member the rest of his life.
In conversations with Sherm, you would quickly learn of his incredible love for his kids and grandkids. Family was number one in his eyes. He never missed an opportunity to help someone including loaning out his car, mowing neighbors' lawns, giving advice, and sharing his real estate knowledge. He was happiest when he was giving to others. He had a huge heart that welcomed everyone. If you weren't related by blood, he considered you an adopted family member and forever friend!
Sherm was the Los Angeles Dodger's # 1 fan, daily wearing his Dodgers' gear and proudly proclaiming that he and Tommy Lasorda "bled Dodger blue."
Sherm was called to his heavenly home on Tuesday, August 7, 2018, after a hard-fought battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Blanche Petersen, his brother Paul Petersen, his first wife JoAnn and granddaughter Rachael Gierhan. He is survived by his wife Connie Petersen; children: Sheri (Tom) Esswein, Larry (Ray) Petersen, Gary (Robyn) Petersen, Terry (Mark) Petersen, Kim (Marlisa) Petersen and Tami (Chris) Petersen-Gierhan; grandchildren Lindsay, Erik, Scott, Bethany and Sam; great grandchildren Lauren and Hudson and several nieces and nephews.
