Verna E. Perier
January 12, 1926 - January 7, 2019
Verna Edwina Perier, age 92, passed away peacefully to be with Jesus on January 7, 2019. Verna was born January 12, 1926, in Oakland, California to parents Vernon and Henrietta (Black) Pearson. She will be lovingly remembered by her family and friends as having led an exemplary and active Christian life.
At 16 years old she met her husband Donald (Don) Perier at a bowling alley in Truckee, CA. Donald was in the Navy and Verna was a Cadet nurse in training (her childhood dream) at the Mercy College of Nursing in Sacramento (now Mercy Hospital). At the end of the war, Don came home on a weekend pass from the Navy and they were married on June 24, 1945, in Oakland, CA. Verna earned her degree in Nursing, became an RN, and was one of the first nurses to work at Doctors Hospital (now Doctors Medical Center) in Modesto in 1962. She worked at various areas of the hospital over the years, but would proudly say that she was the first nurse to work in the Cardiology Department in 1973.
Donald and Verna had one son, David Perier and one daughter, Donna Holloway. After living in several cities all over Northern California, they eventually called Modesto their home, where Verna lived for 61 years. Verna and Don went on 33 cruises and visited every country, except India. She was proud of her missionary work which took her to orphanages in Santa Domingo and China. When not traveling she immersed herself in her family's genealogy (writing 8 books!), attended Bible study, and never missed church on Wednesday nights or Sunday mornings. After 57 years of marriage, Donald passed away in August 2002.
The last 11 years of her life she lived in the Senior living apartments at Parkview Estates, where she loved to participate in dress up days, group Bible study, and aerobics for Seniors. After nearly 40 years, she picked up playing the piano again and played regularly for the Parkview choir every Monday afternoon.
Verna is survived by her children, David Perier and Donna Holloway, grandchildren: Jennifer Perier, Phillip Gilbert, Jefferson Noroña, Tiffany Moore, Trevor Holloway, and nine great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Donald Perier, sisters Betty Ahrendes and Marilyn Taylor.
A celebration of Verna's life will be held at 2:00pm on Monday, January 14, 2019, at Centenary United Methodist Church on 1911 Toyon Avenue in Modesto (on McHenry Avenue).
