Jeannette Otero, age 89, a lifelong resident of Needles, Calif., passed away on Saturday, May 29, 2021, surrounded by her family and loved ones. She was born August 30, 1931 in Needles, Calif. to the late Lute and Frances Wilbur Stillman.
Jeannette graduated from Tucson Presbyterian Indian School in Escuela, Ariz. with an emphasis in homemaking and home nursing. Following graduation, she spent a year in Illinois on a training assignment and then began a brief LVN training before starting her life as a mother. Jeannette was a mother and homemaker, raising seven children, giving unconditional love to each one of them. Her long life was devoted to her children and family.
By the early 80's Jeannette began her extinguished community service, thus making her commitment to the following: Riverside-San Bernardino County Indian Health Inc., Board of Directors, 18 years; Fort Mojave Indian Tribe Health Board (Chair), 20 years; Fort Mojave Indian Tribe Farm Board (Chair), 28 years; AhaMacav Housing Commission, three years; Fort Mojave Tribal Council, two terms. In retirement, Jeannette attended tribal community meetings, senior activities and spent time reading the local and regional newspapers, as to keep informed of community, environmental, political and news worthy events that impacted her life and others.
She was preceded in death by her son, Myron Echohawk; parents, Lute and Frances Wilbur Stillman; sisters, Alberta Stillman, Sylvia Arteaga and Lorena Harvey; brother, Courtney Stillman, Sr.; nephews, Chapman Patch, Lloyd Patch, Courtney Stillman, Jr., Christian Stillman; and niece, Lizann Kinale.
She is survived by her daughters, Linda Otero of Needles, Calif. and Laura Otero of Las Vegas, Nev.; sons, Michael Otero of Needles, Calif., Richard Otero of Las Vegas, Nev., Martin (Christina) Otero of Needles, Calif. and Darren Otero of Topock, Ariz.; sister, Jovita Williams of Needles, Calif.; grandchildren, Jeannine, Bianca and Joaquin; great-grandchildren, Ilyanna and Levi; nieces, Mary (Wally) Howe of Mohave Valley, Ariz. and Missy Stillman of Phoenix, Ariz.; nephews, Corrigan (Eva) Williams of Needles, Calif., Dongoi Harvey of Needles, Calif., Cornell Patch of San Bernardino, Calif.; and many relatives.
Traditional services were held at 4 pm on Tuesday, June 8, 2021 at the Fort Mojave Mourning Hall, 700 Harrison Street, Needles, CA. Cremation commenced at 4 am on Wednesday, June 9, 2021 at the Fort Mojave Cemetery, 700 Harrison Street, Needles, CA.
A heartfelt thank you to the many relatives and friends for making her life lovingly fulfilled.
