Dr. Stephen Brabeck
April 9, 1950 - February 26, 2018
Carmel Valley
Stephen Joseph Brabeck, born April 9, 1950, in St. Paul, Minnesota, died surrounded by his family at his home in Carmel Valley, California after a six-month illness,. A resident of Carmel Valley since 1996, Steve was a highly respected cardiologist who dedicated his life to improving the health and well being of others. He was actively engaged in the foundation of the Adult Congenital Heart Association (he was himself a survivor of congenital heart disease), and he attended patients at both the Community Hospital of Monterey Peninsula and the Natividad Medical Center in Salinas. In 2012, Steve opened Quail and Olive, a retail olive oil and vinegar tasting store in the heart of Carmel Valley Village. Having studied at the Goldring Center for Culinary Medicine at Tulane University, Steve's principal goals were to use his clinical skills and long-held interest in nutrition and the culinary arts to promote heart-healthy cooking, and to make available high quality, locally-sourced olive oils and specialty vinegars to the community.
Steve is survived by his wife, Elise; his five children, Annelise (Will Wilford), Peter, Sarah, Rosie (Ryan Commons), and Ghion; five grandchildren; and his three brothers, Peter, Michael, and Thomas.
A Memorial Mass will be held Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at 10:00am at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 9 El Caminito Rd, Carmel Valley, CA 93924.

My sincere condolences to the family - I worked with Dr. Brabeck on Main Pavilion back in 1998 and he was such a gentleman and scholar. He was much loved by the nurses for his gentle manner and respect for those with whom he worked. When I was a new grad, he took the time to explain things to me and taught me a great deal.
I am so saddened to hear of his passing, but am so grateful to have known and worked with such a fine human being.

Ten years ago, he did a five-way bypass surgery on my dad and saved his life. Words cannot express my family's gratitude

Dr. Brabeck was with me at CHOMP when I had my heart attack. I truly believe he saved my life. I had the honor of being treated by him for a good many years. He was a kind, gentle soul. I admired him and always left his office knowing he had listened, had given me good advice and that I was safe. I am sure that everyone whose life he came into is grateful and shall never forget him. I wish his family the comfort of God and those who knew and loved him best.
