Joseph C. Mello Obituary
Joseph C. Mello
10/25/1925-1/9/2019
Carmel Valley, CA
Joseph C. Mello, 93, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 9th at Community Hospital surrounded by loving family members. He was born October 25, 1925 to Isabel Azevedo in Porterville, CA. He moved to Pacific Grove at the age of 7, attended Bayview Elementary and graduated from Monterey High School in 1944. Joe exceled in high school sports and was a sports fan his entire life hardly ever missing a 49er's game on television. After graduating from high school, Joe joined the Merchant Marine and sailed around the world, with many of his trips taking him to Asia, in particular China and Singapore. After leaving the Merchant Marine, he worked for a short time as a commercial fisherman before joining PG&E in 1948. Joe worked at PG&E for 42 years as a lineman, retiring in 1990. His nickname at work was 'Super Joe' and he was still climbing power poles when he retired. Joe also enjoyed many years of his life with close friends playing cards, hunting, fishing and camping.
In 1955 Joe married Rose Patterson in the San Carlos Cathedral in Monterey after a long courtship of 6 years. They settled in Monterey and immediately started a family. Later, Joe and Rose moved their young family from Monterey to Carmel Valley in 1962 and lived there happily until his passing. In all they had 9 children who lived a fun rural life raising chickens, ducks, turkeys, peacocks, pigs, cows and horses on their Carmel Valley property. Each year they grew a collection of vegetables in their garden and had an orchard that produced a variety of fruit. Joe especially liked tending to his tomato plants, grape vines, and fruit trees.
After retirement, Joe and Rose took many trips to see their children around the country, always stopping at multiple casinos on their trips back and forth.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings Arthur, Lucy, Ida, Willy, Hilda, Melvina and Hilton, and grandchild Joey. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Rose, and children Joe (Gail), Jenny Brindle (Tony), Sharon Conley (Geoff), Teresa, Eric, Brian (Susana), Karen Lyons (Lance), Becky and Nancy; 15 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
There will be a mass celebrating Joe's life at Mission Mortuary in Monterey on January 17, 2019 at 11:00 am, with visitation beginning at 9:00 am.
