WEST LINN, OREGON – Frederick Bryant "Joe" Taylor, 52, beloved husband, father, son and brother passed away unexpectedly in Maui, Hawaii. As a longtime resident of Monterey, Joe was the owner and Sensei of Shotokan Karate of Monterey and taught many students in the area. He and his wife, Cathy, moved from Monterey to the West Linn area seven years ago. Joe was a kind, loving and giving man and will be missed by all he touched. God bless him and hold him forever as he joins his father in Heaven. He is survived by his wife, Cathy, of West Linn; son, Jarrod Taylor; mother, Sue Taylor and brother, Mick Taylor, all of Antioch, California. There will be a memorial in Joe's honor for family and friends in Antioch on October 6, 2007 as well as in West Linn, on October 13, 2007.
Friends are invited to contact family for details at [email protected]. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations to go to the Joe Taylor Memorial Fund at any Bank of America. Go with God Joe, you will be very much missed.

I hope to be retired sometime next year around your birthday (my half birthday) and really looking forward to that. You left us at 52 so I can tell you, 65 was when things really shifted things for me. LOL Just wanted to say we love AND miss you Joe Taylor, you were one of a kind.

I studied under Sensei Taylor in my youth and early teen years and it was always a amazing time I learned a lot from him not just in martial arts but being a in life I started with Sensei Taylor at the basement of the elks lodge and got to be a part of the opening of the dojo near el estero he was a amazing human being and it pains me to know he's gone but will never be forgotten! thanks for everything SENSEI .

Tomorrow will be 12 years since you left us and we still miss and think of you everyday. Your grandkids are growing like weeds and are as cute as can be. Jarrod and Amanda, his wife, are doing well and have moved back to California so Mom is thrilled to pieces for that too that we can see them more often. I have a long shift at the hospital tomorrow so thought I would drop you a line today so I don't forget when I get home beat after a long day only to go back again and do it again on Saturday! Will raise a toast to you on Sunday night though Bro and hope you will join us for your toast! We love and miss you much.

Every time to pass through Monterey I ride by the old dojo just to see if it is open again and have often tried to find you on the internet. Today going through the garage I found a copy of the August 1999 issue of Martial Arts Professional that you gave me. That issue featured a cover story and article about Jhoon Rhee, the "Father of Taekwondo" and finding that magazine prompted me to try an internet search again... [SIGH]...

My Brother Joe. This Saturday (7th April) would have been your 63rd birthday and if you were still here I could tell you what an old fart you were becoming! That's OK though because I am right behind you. At 63 you would now have two grandchildren, a Boy and a Girl and I am sure you would want to spoil them to pieces. The Boy, Larkin, can dribble a basketball and make it in to the basket and he is still a toddler! The little Girl is still a baby and finding her way in this new world, but will have a big brother to take care of her as you did me. I miss you Joe, think of you all the time, and wish you were still here everyday. God bless you brother we all love you so much!!!

I am shocked to have just learned the news. And heart broken that it's taken me this long to find out. You were a great friend and I will never forget not only your knowledge of karate, but also your willingness to train all of us hard and exceed our internal plateaus. Well brother it has now been 7 years since you left us. We still think about you all the time and wish you were here. Amanda lost the baby early in the pregnancy so it looks like you are not going to be a grandfather just yet. They are doing well though and will be trying again soon. Wow, Joe I can't believe it's been 5 years. It seems like only a month ago since you and I were kickin it. Whenever I go up to Northern California, I still here other people talking "bad" about you, which is a good thing. So many were jealous of you Joe. Remember it's when they don't talk about you is when you have to worry. Your legend lives on. Not a week goes by when I don't think of all the great times we had and that great smile of yours. All of my former students thought the world of you. They would say to me, "Sir. when can we go to Sensei Taylor's club again and work out?" Or "Sir. Is Sensei Taylor going to be at the tournament this week?"

Dear Joe, As everyone else has expressed, I too cannot believe you are gone. Though years and distance have separated the life we once shared in our much younger years, we were bound together by the birth of our son. Everytime I saw you you would always take the time to find out how I was doing in life and in school. Not many adults ever take the time to ask a teenager how their day is. You always did. I'll never forget the first time I heard you and your beautiful wife's voice...you welcomed my husband (a complete stranger) to a brand new state while I was still in CA trying to sell our house. I talked to you and Cathy on the phone and knew that I had found my new "home." Joe, you were always the first one to lend a helping hand and share a smile with someone who needed it.
