Benjamin Harwell

HARWELL, Benjamin James, Jr., 93, a resident of Montgomery, AL, passed away March 20, 2014. He attended the Barnes School in Montgomery and went on to attend Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn University) where he studied Landscape Architecture. Ben was an active member of First Baptist Church. In January 1955, he and his wife founded Green Thumb Nursery. Ben was always eager to serve others and to share his knowledge and love of plants with everyone.

He is preceded by his wife of 65 years, Jimmie Stitt Harwell, and parents, Benjamin J. Harwell & Margaret Schmidt Harwell. Survivors include his sons, James (Libby) and Charles (Carolyn); four grandchildren, Patrick (Leslie), Ashley (Mark) Norton, Will, & Andrew (Elizabeth); and seven great grandchildren.

The family would like to express their appreciation to everyone at Wesley Gardens and Angels for the Elderly for their compassion and love in caring for their father.

His Funeral Service will be on Sunday, March 23rd at 2:30PM at Southern Memorial with Dr. Jay Wolf officiating. Visitation will begin at 1:00PM prior to the service.
