David Ennis McCorvey

David Ennis McCorvey was born September 26, 1923, in Tunnel Springs, Alabama. He was preceded in death by his loving parents Ennis John McCorvey and Julia Nelson McCorvey, seven brothers - Johnny, Roosevelt, Willie, James, Ennis, Sandy, Charlie, and two sisters - Celeste and Mary.

He attended the Monroe Country Training Schools for Negroes and then Alabama State Teacher's College (now Alabama State University), where he graduated with a Bachelor's and a Master's Degree. During his high school years, he played basketball and was called "A-'Dunk'-ky." In 1944, he joined the United States Navy and served honorably as a Seaman First Class until the end of World War II. After the war, he became an entrepreneur and opened a store and eatery in Lanett, Alabama, where he met and eventually married the love of his life, Olga Lanier. They moved to Montgomery and he worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 34 years, retiring in 1987. During this time, he ran the College Hill Grocery Store across the street from Alabama State University for almost 10 years. He also had an insect extermination business.

He has been a devoted member of First Baptist "Brick-A-Day" Church for over 50 years. He served under several ministers at First Baptist including Reverend Ralph David Abernathy, Sr., who shepherded his Ordination to the position of Deacon at First Baptist Church in 1958. Rev. Abernathy served as Minister at First Baptist Church from 1952 to 1961. Mr. McCorvey was the last living Deacon confirmed by Rev. Abernathy.

He leaves to cherish his memory a devoted Son and Daughter-in-Law, Dr. Everett McCorvey and Alicia Helm McCorvey and their children, Elizabeth Lanier McCorvey, Julia Marie McCorvey and David William Lanier McCorvey; a loving Nephew, LeKeedric Taylor, who took care of him up until his death, a caring Niece, Lenisha Taylor, who also helped in his care, and LeKia, Lendra, and Lee Rashad, Ennis III and Pam McCorvey, and a host of relatives.

In lieu of Flowers, the family requests that Memorial Gifts in Mr. McCorvey's honor be sent to First Baptist Church, 347 North Ripley Street, Montgomery, Alabama, 36104.

Funeral Arrangements entrusted to Ross-Clayton Funeral Home, Inc, 1412 Adams Avenue, Montgomery, Alabama, 36104. Because of the COVID -19 Coronavirus outbreak and the CDC's recommendation, a public funeral service will not be held at this time. Viewing will be on Wednesday, March 18, 2020 at Ross-Clayton Funeral Home. A private burial will be held on Thursday, March 19, 2020 the Antioch Baptist Church #1 Cemetery, 2168 County Road 42, Peterman, Alabama. Memorial Services will be held at a later date.
