Larry Dixon Obituary

Larry Dean Dixon

Larry Dean Dixon, a former State Senator and Executive Director of the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners, died December 4, 2020 in Montgomery, Alabama. He was born August 31, 1942 in Oklahoma and grew up in Prosser, Washington. After high school graduation and three years of service with the U. S. Army in Germany, he returned to Washington State University where he received his undergraduate and graduate degrees.

It was there that he met his wife of 53 years, Gaynell Kimbrough Dixon, and they decided to make their home in her native state of Alabama. Senator Dixon was first employed by the Alabama State Department of Education before accepting an opportunity to initiate a continuing education program for physicians with the Medical Association of the State of Alabama. In 1981, he became Executive Director of the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners and served with distinction until his retirement in 2016.

His accomplishments on the national level as a four-term Board Member of the United States Federation of State Medical Boards and as a founder of Administrators in Medicine, which he served as the first President, were noted by his selection for the Lifetime Achievement Award by the federation. He was recognized in his home state by inclusion in the Alabama Healthcare Hall of Fame in 2016.

Later that year, he was additionally honored with the decision by the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners to rename their building, on his retirement, as the Dixon-Parker Building.

Senator Dixon's dedication to his new home was demonstrated early when he decided to seek election to the Montgomery City Council in 1975. He served the community until 1978 when he entered the Alabama House of Representatives and, in 1983, the Alabama Senate, where he served until 2010. He is remembered as a man of character who fought for transparency and fiscal conservatism throughout his 35 years in government.

He took the greatest pride, however, in his family - his wife, Gaynell, who was always by his side with encouragement and support, his daughters, Katherine Kimbrough Dixon Hert, her husband, Chris, and their children, Hannah Elizabeth Hert and Christina Lucille Hert of Montgomery, and Elizabeth Walker Dixon Allen, her husband, Grier, and their children, Elliott Grier Allen, Jr. and William Walker Dixon Allen of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.

Senator Dixon leaves an older brother, Charles Lee Dixon and his wife, Barbara, of Orlando, Florida and their children, Jeffrey Scott Dixon, his wife Cathy, and Eric Dean Dixon and his wife Mitchie. He also leaves his brother-in-law, William Edwin Kimbrough and his wife, Anne, and their children, William Zachery Kimbrough, his wife, Nicole, and Melissa Anne Kimbrough Gunter and her husband, Tony. Senator Dixon was preceded in death by his parents, Chesley Lafayette and Charlene Walker Dixon of Prosser, Washington.

Following his retirement, Senator Dixon volunteered with the Respite Program at Montgomery's First United Methodist Church. Contributions in his memory would be welcome to that program or to the United Methodist Children's Home, the Stegall Seminary Scholarship Foundation, or to the Montgomery Symphony.

A memorial service to celebrate Senator Dixon's life is planned for a future date with Magnolia Cremations & Funeral Services, directing

It has taken me more than a few days to even have words to say. My heart aches for Gaynell & Katherine & Elizabeth and the entire family as well as his friends. I had the privilege in life of working with and beside Larry Dixon, first in negotiations between the NPAA & the BME regarding Controlled Prescribing for NPs in AL & then later on as an employee under his leadership at the BME. Larry was a master at listening intently to all people and then respectfully leading the situation at hand. He had a way of showing kindness and respect to all people, regardless of whether opinions differed or not. He had a special way of diffusing controversy that yielded results and compromise. Larry was a master of humbling owning one’s mistakes and taking the responsibility that came with it. I am forever thankful of the opportunity to know Larry Dixon and to learn from him. He truly had a servant’s heart. Praying for peace of all of those who mourn.

The last time we saw Larry was joyous and happy. We were at the ‘Broadway Under the Stars ‘concert at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. I was able to play that one, and I was again able to again thank him for his help with the startup of the Montgomery Symphony and help thru the years!
The Montgomery Symphony Association had been started at the Dixon’s home , on the front porch swing...and it was an organization dear to them both. He was his enthusiastic happy self that fun evening ,and said he was glad I had made it. Many wonderful words are being said about his leadership. For his grandchildren and beyond let me add ...He was a natural leader who knew what was good and right for all, and he never took his eyes off the goals in front of him. He was loved and is missed.

Larry was a personal hero to everyone who knew him. His dedication, moral compass, and caring for others guided his life of service. He was selfless - his every effort was dedicated to his family, his community, his constituents, and his community. He was STONG and TRUE, loved by all. His personal commitment was a great example of how one person can be an inspiration to many generations. ALL of his family and friends and acquaintances bow their heads in his honor, and thank our creator for creating leaders like him!

Larry was not only a friend but a honest and outstanding State Senator. He put his family and his duties to his constituents ahead of any personal motivations. He was a rare public servant and a patriot. He will be missed.

Larry and I came to the Alabama House in 1978, and enjoyed a mutual respect through the years. He was strong in his positions but always a gentleman. The last time I spoke with him, perhaps two years ago, I told him again what an outstanding job he did for the people of his district and his community. My condolences to Gaynell and the entire family. His passing is a shock and a real blow to us all.

Dear Gaynell,

Your parents, Thelma and Zeke, were like grandparents to my three children. We lived next door and they were the best neighbors ever. When you and Larry married we filmed you wedding as a gift. You two were always very much in love. Sending my deepest sympathy and love to you and your family.
