Gus Polizos Obituary

Gus V. Polizos, age 94, of Montgomery, AL died Tuesday, June 3, 2014. He was born in the village of Klima on the island of Skopelos, Greece on May 4, 1920. He was the son of the late Valsamas and Ourania Polizos. Gus immigrated to the United States in 1935. After his service in the army, he moved to Montgomery to work with his brother in law at the Sheridan Cafe. In 1948, he traveled back to Greece and married his beloved wife, Kiki D. Hirras. Their 65 years of marriage was filled with a lifetime of love, devotion and respect.

In 1955, Gus with his brother Nick and cousin Vick Fivgas opened the Riviera Restaurant. After 24 years, he left and bought Mr. G's Restaurant. He continued to work with his children in their restaurants helping and giving advice until this year. His professional life spanned a total of 65 years in various restaurants in Montgomery.

Gus was a founding member of the Greek Orthodox Church of Montgomery. He was also a founding and life long member of The A.H.E.P.A (American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association) chapter of Montgomery. He had a passion for his ancestry, cooking, gardening, his cat "Zacho" and Alabama football.

He is preceded in death by his brother, Nick Polizos and sisters Kettie Berdanis and Anthoula Manoliou. He is survived by his wife Kiki; by his sons, Dr. Victor (Christina) Polizos of Atlanta, GA, Alabama State Representative Dimitri (Dottie) Polizos and his daughter, Magdalene Calambakas both of Montgomery; his grandchildren, Kiki (Nick) Kipreos of Richmond, VA, Constance Calambakas of Montgomery, Pete (Ashley) Polizos of Birmingham, AL, Georgea Polizos of Washington D.C., Constantine Polizos of Durham, NC, and Dean Polizos of Richmond, VA; four great-grandchildren and a sister, Alexandria Kotsovelos of Athens, Greece.

Funeral services will be at the Greek Orthodox Church of Montgomery, 1721 Mt. Meigs Rd. on Friday, June 6, 2014 11:00am and burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation is Thursday 5:00pm-7:00pm at Leak Memorial with Trisigion (prayer service) @ 6:30pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Greek Orthodox Church of Montgomery, AL.

We would like to say how sorry we were to hear about Mr.Gus.We were out of town when we found out.My aunt Rose Barton (rosie) worked for Gus for many years,so I have known him since I was a young girl.Everyone there treated my aunt like she was family.My husband and I went to Capital Grill a lot.We knew Dimitrus and the daughter.One time not to long ago Mr.Gus.was there and we talked to him.He was a fine gentleman and such a hard worker.Your family is so blessed with your parents and their long marriage.God bless all of you
